do you have a white or red heat lamp? once i switched to a red (infrared) my chicks settled right down and were quiet. It made a huge difference. I guess the white light mimics sunlight, which seems to trigger alert, daytime activity and sounds...
Thanks for the answer. the shavings i got are particularly dusty--not the usual fluffy stuff i typically get. So could it just be sawdust making them sneeze? And, i think it's only one of the chicks and she sneezes only occasionally.
Aside from the typical "grower" mash you get at the feed store, is there something else I can/should give my chicks now that they're not out grazing? The ground is frozen and they are too little to free range. This is the first time I've had chicks in the cold weather, so I'm not sure how to...
I have six 10-week old chicks and still have the heat lamp on in their coop. The place is draft-free with lots of bedding. But a few are sneezing occasionally. Should I introduce vitamins in the water? And how long should I keep the infrared light on in the coop? Other than the odd sneeze or...
I live in MA, which is always cold. Rather than heat the water, I buy two water bottles and exchange them everyday. This insures that they get fresh water daily. Cheaper and safer than buying or making a heater, I think...
It may be fisher cat, which is a type of weasel. They are very wily and can get into the smallest spaces. Usually, they bite the chicken on the neck and just suck the blood. Not sure why but I've seen that happen to three of my chickens--once before my very eyes. Weasels are viscous predators...
my bantam hens laid eggs that have soft shells--one that actually burst in the hen house. this is the first time it's happened; other eggs have been fine. might it have anything to do with them eating fertilizer put on lawn today?
any guess on breed? i know he's not a RI-red. maybe buckeye?
he's about four months old. reddish/black feathers with some silvery ones on back. kinda shy personality. hearty eater and very nice to the hens.
i just put your guess into google images and the pics look exactly my girls. Thank you so much! These are very smart birds compared to others I've had, but not as sweet tempered. Thanks again!! The expertise on this forum is so impressive.
ok, thanks. i'll keep at it. i have noticed some improvement: they stop and peer at me when they hear my voice, but if I come closer they get frantic again. Treats, it is!!
I'm a relatively experienced chicken person, but these are my first (golden) wyandots. These girls (only two) are so skittish! I've tried everything: special treats, talking in a soft voice, making sure my border collie is nowhere in sight. She was accompanying me to the coop in the past, so the...
