DG- It's been really cold here. My little chicks are doing great under their silkie momma, outside in an unheated coop. If your mom's silkie adopted the babies you are set. All you have to do is make sure they have food and water available, a dry cozy place to sleep, and relax and sit back and enjoy the cuteness. Silkies make great momma's, she'll do all the work from here on.
Since I don't have a vehicle of my own yet, I still rely on my parents to give me a ride to the store to buy a light. I usually buy at least one extra one because I don't know when one will burn out, and the next time I'll be able to get to the store.
I put my 2-day old chicks in a heated brooder in the outdoor coop - and they're doing great - even on the days that were below freezing. Water in the waterers on the other side of the coop froze - but the brooder was fine. As long as it is draft-free - and there is a heated spot for them to warm up in, they should be fine. I've kept chicks in the house until they were several weeks old. Never again - too noisy and too dusty. Chicks have thrived outdoors for centuries. Again - draft-free and one very warm spot.
ETA: Glad to read that the silkie is mothering then. That should pretty much solve the problem. Good luck!
do you have a white or red heat lamp? once i switched to a red (infrared) my chicks settled right down and were quiet. It made a huge difference. I guess the white light mimics sunlight, which seems to trigger alert, daytime activity and sounds...
