introducing a "new" 1yr old hen to an already new flock

So here's my crazy situation. My "established" flock is pretty established, but not that old. Had only one 3 yr old hen left, so introduced four 2 month old pullets that are now 4 months. Of course, old Alice is the queen. Am now adding a 1 yr old hen. Alice, the 3 yr old is not happy and...

new pullets-one older hen-need feeding advice

I have one 3 year old EE hen remaining. She has been on layer pellets and free access to oyster shell. I now have 5 pullets, ranging from 11 to 14 weeks. I have them separated by wire for now and they are on chick starter. I know they need the starter/grower until they're about 6 months...

Mixing hatchery chicks with "home grown"

I purchased three 12 week old pullets from a feed store where they were raised from 1 day olds. Presumably they were inoculated with whatever they give chicks before shipping. I want to add 2 more 9 week old pullets from someone who hatched and raised his own. Should I worry about mixing...

    thin shelled eggs

My Rhode Island Red has been laying very thin shelled eggs for some time now. They have free access to calcium. She eats well and otherwise seems healthy. Any suggestions? My other two chickens lay perfectly normal shelled eggs.

Thanks for all the replies. Guess my chickens will enjoy open air almost year round!

When do I close the coop windows?

It is certainly not cold yet, and seldom gets really cold in LA, but it is getting cooler. The windows to the coop have been wide open all summer. Am wondering how "cool" does it need to get for me to start closing the windows at night?

how long b4 i get eggs from my barred rocks?

One of mine laid at 20 1/2 weeks, the other at 21 weeks. One has laid an egg every day since she started, the other one lays about 3 days in a row, then skips a day. Her eggs are larger than the every day layer.

lets see the "ugly" coops plz

Ours is functional if not beautiful and didn't cost much. The run was built against an existing wood fence ( I gave up a flower bed.) The coop house started with a pallet. Love being able to open the nesting boxes from the outside. There is also a door on the other side of the coop for easy...

    The EE braggers thread!!!

Quote: No, we didn't bathe her. She is really white all over with dark olive green legs. Here is a picture of her as a baby chick. We bought her at a local store. Not sure which hatchery she came from.

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

Finally the day has arrived! At 20 1/2 weeks. We've been watching the barred rocks closely because they look so ready, but it was Alice, our Easter Egger who came through first. Didn't make it in the nesting box, but in the run under the ladder going up to the coop. Her first two eggs next...
