I want to emphasize that my comment is for people who are very sensitive and tender-hearted. If you can deal with the aggressiveness of chickens pecking and hurting each other during the process of re-establishing a pecking order, then disregard my post!

If you have anything around that the chickens can hide under, even an old wagon, table etc., that might help.

I wonder if one put wood or metal stakes close together around the pen if that would help keep predator birds from being able to swoop down and grab the chickens?

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I put a fake owl on a post and, even though there are hawks and falcons around, I've not had any problems. I hope I didn't just jinx my chickie babies!

I've dusted baby robins that were covered with those tiny black demons and they were fine.

Hey, are talking about lice or mites? Mites are very tiny black things that kind of tickle when they crawl up your arm...yuck. I've had to deal with those with some of the baby birds I've raised.

This is only my first year having chickens, so I hope I am corrected if I'm wrong. I would dust them gently and sparingly with poultry dust or Sevin. Maybe keep your daughter away from them for a day or so. I have had to dust baby birds (baby robins) with Sevin before for the same situation...

How sweet! Our favorite chicken, a buff orpington, is ALSO named Nugget...short for Miss Golden Chicken Nugget. She's the only one who I feel.comfortable letting the neighbor children pet and hold...she's SO mellow!

I use bleach water to clean my water dispensers. I always rinse well with fresh water, but I'm sure there is a trace of bleach left. I wouldn't intentionally add bleach to their water. Cleaning and giving fresh water every day should be sufficient, I would think. I always add vitamens to...

I agree. My seven hens get along very well, but they still will 'challenge' for the top position. Just tonight, Roxanne, one of my barred rocks, started pecking and pulling on the other chickens on the roost. I separated her, but she went right back and started being nasty to the others...
