I want to emphasize that my comment is for people who are very sensitive and tender-hearted. If you can deal with the aggressiveness of chickens pecking and hurting each other during the process of re-establishing a pecking order, then disregard my post!
I wish I had viewed a topic like this before starting out! I researched library books, internet and talked with so many 'chicken people', but what I didn't find out or realize was: If you are new to this chicken stuff and want to have your own chickens, START OUT WITH ONE EASY, HARDY, GENTLE...
I love reading these...alot of them put everything into perspective. Seems like everyone's life is someone else's dream. It all comes down to attitude and perspective. I let my seven girls out of the coop at first daylight...if I'm late, they let me have it verbally. I sprinkle scratch...
I wonder if one put wood or metal stakes close together around the pen if that would help keep predator birds from being able to swoop down and grab the chickens?
Maybe I've just been lucky, but I put a fake owl on a post and, even though there are hawks and falcons around, I've not had any problems. I hope I didn't just jinx my chickie babies!
Hey, are talking about lice or mites? Mites are very tiny black things that kind of tickle when they crawl up your arm...yuck. I've had to deal with those with some of the baby birds I've raised.
This is only my first year having chickens, so I hope I am corrected if I'm wrong. I would dust them gently and sparingly with poultry dust or Sevin. Maybe keep your daughter away from them for a day or so. I have had to dust baby birds (baby robins) with Sevin before for the same situation...
How sweet! Our favorite chicken, a buff orpington, is ALSO named Nugget...short for Miss Golden Chicken Nugget. She's the only one who I feel.comfortable letting the neighbor children pet and hold...she's SO mellow!
Someone said earlier that they were allowed one chicken...it's like my dad often stated: "The inmates are running the asylum." We live on nearly two acres in a rural area in Kansas, and while we can legally have a horse, we are not allowed to have ANY chickens. How do you deal with that kind...
I use bleach water to clean my water dispensers. I always rinse well with fresh water, but I'm sure there is a trace of bleach left. I wouldn't intentionally add bleach to their water. Cleaning and giving fresh water every day should be sufficient, I would think. I always add vitamens to...
I agree. My seven hens get along very well, but they still will 'challenge' for the top position. Just tonight, Roxanne, one of my barred rocks, started pecking and pulling on the other chickens on the roost. I separated her, but she went right back and started being nasty to the others...
All the books I've read say NO to putting chickens around your face, and I tell my grandsons not to. But I can't help it! Before I realize it, I'm snuggling and kissing my chickens! They are just so precious! I love it when they look straight into my eyes, even though I know they could peck...
My next door neighbors AND my neighbors across the street both have ferrel cats. The lady next door traps hers and has them spayed/neutered at the vet; the lady across the street doesn't. I agree that once chickens are full-grown, they can pretty much take care of themselves if a cat is stupid...
Poor little babies!!!!! Those dadgummed hawks should stick to mice and snakes!!! Can a hawk take a full-grown chicken? Can night hawks grab chickens? I've had alot of night hawks flying around toward evening when I'm letting my 5-month-old girls free range for awhile before roost-time. This...
Sometimes my young (5 months) hens will lay 'faux eggs' during the night. It's like everything but the shell. The first time it happened, the rubbery outer part looked like a condom, and it totally freaked me out!! It didn't have a yolk. The next time it happened, there was a yolk, so then I...
