I have been thinking of getting a couple of Meat Birds this spring, I already know I will not be able to processes them myself. I'll admit I just don't have it in me.
Does anybody in my area know of someone who will do processing??
Ours cost about $600.00 so far, still need to finish run and some odds and ends hopefully it's the last one we will have to build.
So much for "let's raise chickens and save some money"!

Thanks for all the input, I think Silkie Sue got it right, diffrent strokes for diffrent chickens
I think I will continue to throw scratch in the am but thinking I could also mix in some of their feed too, BTW I am using Purina Sun Fresh Scratch Grains, it is only 8% protien.

Thank you..I throw it out so they have something to do in their run, they have eaten all the grass in there and now there is just dirt. So a couple of handfuls of BOSS and wild bird food would be better than the scratch? How about some hay?
I just made them a flock block, using a recipe I...

We too are new to chicken raising and I have become so attached to these chicks, mine are now 9 weeks and they are my chicken children My own children think I have lost my mind!
I am glad to see that after reading many of our fellow poster's we are not insane just chicken crazy...
Thanks Capvin. The run as it is, is only temporary. The girls were getting way to big for the brooder and had to go out! They are in the coop after dark and 3/4 of our yard is fenced with stockade. The plan is to make it larger and reinforce with welded wire around the inside and a skirt...
Thanks everybody We still need to finish the top of the run, as you can see we are using a blue tarp at the moment. Not to many predators to worry about here, just the hawks. And we need to build a set of people stairs. Already thinking that we should have made the run bigger, we used a 6x10...
The coop is finally done, took about 2 weeks, still have some things to finish up. The girls have been in it for about a week now and seem to be loving it.
After seeing that what was out there for chicken coops was insanely expensive, and so small. We have decided to build our own.
Planning a 6' x 8' coop, went to HD yestarday and spent a little over $250.00 for lumber (cheaped out a little, going with the OSB board instead of plywood),
but we...
