    Buffalo gnats - help

Western Pennsylvania- we have a small stream that goes through our yard and are surrounded by woods. Last year they were bad from mid May until maybe the second week in June. We didn't spend a lot of time outside because of them. My kids have very sensitive skin and have had reactions to most of...

    Buffalo gnats - help

Okay vanilla was all I had on hand, but I'll pick up some permethrin spray tomorrow and try that too. Last year we had them too and thankfully only for a few weeks. They mostly went after my son. Thanks for the suggestion

    Buffalo gnats - help

So we have blood sucking Buffalo gnats in our yard. They are biting one of our ducks more than the other members of our flock (9 pullets - ranging from 10-12 weeks and 2 pekin ducks around 11 weeks). Anyway I went down to the run to do my afternoon check in today and noticed the one duck had...

Is my chicken 8 weeks old?

That would make it 9-10 weeks

Is my chicken 8 weeks old?

Could be eight weeks. Looks similar in size and feathering to mine that are 8 weeks

Everyone's favorite game: hen or roo?!

We got 3 Black Australorps back in March. At 4 weeks 1 of them looked similar to the 2 pics you posted. They are now around 8 weeks and all 3 look very similar to each other. I think all of ours are pullets, but one started developing a little earlier than the rest. So maybe too early to tell...

    Unexpected ducks

I know. They seem like a real piece of work and probably not worth having a dispute over at this point. My birds will be in the run protected this year and we will have to figure something out when we start letting ours out. I don't mind them being here in general just don't want them to harm mine

    Unexpected ducks

Turns out they belong to the property just down stream from us. It is about a half mile from the road and blocked by a plot of woods so you can't really see much but the drive way. Looks like a junk yard. We moved here 8 years ago,, but they never stopped and introduced themselves like the other...

6 week BAs and 5 week RIR - gender guesses?

Updates a couple weeks later....it's so had to get pictures...all the black australorps (8 weeks) are looking very similar now and the rhode island red (7 weeks) hasn't changed much...but now I am suspect of the gold laced wyandotte (single combed hatchery 7 weeks) and the easter egger that was...

    Unexpected ducks

I believe they probably belong to a neighboring property. I plan to check in with some of our neighbors to see if they are looking for them. We have a small rural plot of land with several farms only a few acres away. 2 springs ago we had 3 white ducks passing back and forth through our stream...

    Unexpected ducks

I I am a newbie to ducks, but at least one of the 2 have a clear drake feather. I wasn't sure about the other. They both have a raspy quack that I witnessed as they scurried away while I tried to take pictures. Hopefully I can deter them from hanging around with just being present more in the...

    Unexpected ducks

I'm not yet sure as I don't believe they've reached full maturity at 7-8 weeks

    Unexpected ducks

So we have 2 new ducklings 7-8 weeks old - probably Pekin, but possibly another white breed. We are new to having a flock we also have several various chicks ranging from 6-8 weeks. They all live together in a run with separate sleeping sections in a 2 story coop that was completed last...

6 week BAs and 5 week RIR - gender guesses?

I've been watching some other posts. So far my guess is BA1 is a cockerel and the rest pullets. It'll be exciting to find out what they are. We can only keep 1 roo as we are only keeping a small flock as our coop can only occupy 10 chickens at most. Anyone care to guess? Promise to update! Can...
