I have 3 light brahma hens that have taken to my Lavender Orpington roo, and my cuckoo Marans has gracefully sat upon their eggs, along with her own (cuckoo maransXbirchen marans roo). Can anyone tell me what the babies might look like? I am guessing that they will be black, but I don't know...
I got about 4 lavender orpington chicks that were born in January, and 2 ended up pullets, we had one pullet die overnight for no apparent reason in about March/April and then just this weekend had the other pullet die for no apparent reason. Is their a fatal gene in Lavender Orpingtons that...
Your first pic looks very VERY similar to my Birchen Marans chicks. The white/black face and the peek of white wing feathers. I'm not an expert, but Birchen is my vote.
That sounds like a Cochin, they are one of the "lapdogs" of the chicken world, and the roos aren't aggressive hardly ever to humans. Looks like he has the fluffy legs too :)
Thank you for the welcome and the referral! As for Cochins, I don't have a preference though the GL and the Partridge are glorious I will take what i can get
I want a friendly, docile roo as I have wee children.
I really like how user friendly the "insert image" button is compared to previous. ;)
I was also wondering if anyone has any information on where I might find LF Cochins or Ameraucanas to buy. I REALLY don't want to resort to a hatchery. We do organic, so someone that raises organically would...
I have heard that pheasants can transmit diseases to Chickens, and vice versa, and was worried about a wild male pheasant that I keep finding in my chicken run, and sometimes foraging closely behind my ladies when they freerange. Is this something I need to be concerned about, or only if I left...
I om on Whidbey, I have 4 Black Marans, 3 Barred Rocks (though one is questionable, can a barred rock have brown bars?), one RIR and 4 bantams of questionable sex and parentage :) Looking to add an LF Cochin breeding pair, too :)

Are Wyandotte roos as easy going as Cochin roos? This is big factor in the choice also, as I have a 3 and 4 year old (children) and our hens are completely freeranged on our property. Also the weather rarely dips below freezing, and usually hover in the low 40's in winter. We are...
I would like to start breeding my ladies and am looking to cross a Cochin to create a good winter-laying, cold hardy, and docile hen. I also need a roo that won't attack my wee people, cat, and dog. I love the look of the Golden Laced version, but would consider other Cochin Variations. I...
We have 4 Black Marans, 3 Barred Rocks, and 1 RIR, and we were thinking of breeding for more egglayers. It is cool where I live, most of the year and doesn't really get above 80. I also have younger children and would like a roo that I could feel comfortable having the kids around. If I bred...
