    9-week old Easter Egger? - M/F?

Thanks for the reply and suggestion! Yep, I should add that I'd likely keep or try to re-home either way. If it is a roo, will have to consider some flock dynamics. Already have a beautiful but early riser, somewhat anti social barred rock rooster. The BR might be looking for a new home.

    9-week old Easter Egger? - M/F?

I believe this young bird is an Easter Egger of some type. It was included as a bonus rare - exotic from McMurray. Hoping someone might be able to confirm this is an EE and sort out if this looks like a male or a female and what to look for in a breed like the EEs where combs are pretty short...

Stress Free Chicken Tractor - a brief review

Last year I retired my well worn Salatin-style pen and spent hours looking for a different design. I wanted to find something that would make the daily tasks of moving, feeding, and watering easier. There were a number of rounded hoop coop tractor designs I looked into before deciding to buy...

Two weeks, 'rare exotic chick' - dark legs and feet, speckled wings

Would very much like to learn what type of chicken my 'rare exotic chick' may be. I received an order of chicks from McMurray the first full week of April of meat birds (Red Rangers) and fresh layers (Speckled Sussex, RIRs, Leghorns). This bird has dark legs and feet with speckled wings. The...

best looking and laying Barred Rock rooster cross

Hi, Curious if anyone could offer a recommendation for a female chicken breed that could produce an interesting looking, good laying offspring when crossed with a barred rock rooster? I'm looking at getting four fresh layers for my small backyard flock and thought it might be fun if some mutt...

brand new rooster chick - breed ideas?

Wondering if anyone might have a guess what type of chicken this mostly dark chick is? This guy (I'm assuming rooster) was a 'fry pan bargain' from Meyer Hatchery. Thanks for looking!

stuck egg, vent gleet, what to try next?

About two weeks ago, I was checking on our mixed flock of four chickens and noticed two eggs side-by-side in the chickens' covered outdoor day pen. They almost never lay anywhere except their nest boxes. One of the eggs was kind of bloody. The nest boxes revealed some drops of blood in one box...

reclusive, puffed up chicken - any ideas?

Wonderful, thanks everyone for the replies! I have seen the hen in question spending more time than the other hens in a nest box - which has had some feathers in it. I've separated the pictured hen and an ally of hers from the others. Will make up a special breakfast for them in the AM...

reclusive, puffed up chicken - any ideas?

Hi there, thanks for looking - this Rhode Island Red is kind of the 'omega' bird of our flock of four RIRs and one Golden Comet. She seems to get picked on frequently and has recently developed this scrunched up, rounded over posture. Also, she'll sometimes shake her feathers and puff them out...

whats up with my RIR - bugs, missing feathers, normal or worse? pics

Any idea what my 15 month old Rhode Island Red might have going on? Especially struck by a few things: Missing a lot of feathers in the front of her chest. It looks swollen esp on one side. And just above her tail, she's got what kind of looks like could be an ingrown feather.. do chickens...

Any idea what my Rhode Island Red hen has and what to do? (pics)

Just noticed that one of my Rhode Island Red hens has an unusual bulge below her tail feathers. Today the ladies (4 RIR, 1 Golden Comet) gave three eggs. Four is about average. Three isn't all that unusual but I'm guessing she's egg bound. Any suggestions on what to do? Thank you!
