I have had similar experiences with my girls that turned out to be guys... both times Barred Rocks. How I wish I could keep him and breed him with some of my barred hens. I guess I better move to the country.
Ok, after doing some research, and lugging tons of buckets of water down to the coop, I think I want a rain barrel system with nipples or watering cups. Living in Iowa, we have quite cold weather in the winter and I am wondering if any one has made a system that works when in is below freezing...
This is my "mystery chick" from my order from Murray McMurray. She is almost 11 weeks old. she does not have tuffs around her ears like the arucanas and is more buff than the leghorns... i do not know what to think.!

I am looking to purchase 25-30 chicks soon. In the past I have had problems with death at all ages. I am looking for a variety of breeds that lay all colors and can do just fine in the cold, I live in Des Moines and this year we've had wind chills down to -35. I would prefer fairly good egg...
no mites or lice to my finding. no moldy/wet bedding or food. this week they all were pretty lazy and puffed up outside ( i thought just because of the cold?) also a few bird were having trouble flying up ( their run has two different levels in on terraces) but otherwise nothing out of the ordinary.
Last weekend one of our hens died and another on Thursday. It was really cold (Thursday) but last night it wasn't to cold. This morning when I went down all but two of the hens had died. Is there any explanation as to why this would happened so suddenly? Any responses appreciated thank you.
