1 sq. foot per bird for chicken coop in a cold climate?

Sorry about the technology - I'm enough of a newbie I still don't understand how to imbed the previous post. pat and chickens - thanks for such a thoughtful answer!! Like I said at the beginning, I'm new to the backyard chicken thing. All my experience (and advisors) come from small family...

1 sq. foot per bird for chicken coop in a cold climate?

I don't really have an oar in this game - just concerned because I have one of THOSE neighbors. She is just the type of person who would start this, then tire of it, and abandon the birds to languish in the back yard. (She's done this several times with other animals.) While I'm not vegetarian...

Interesting to see Sundari join the conversation, since it is on her word that the 1 sq. ft. legislation was drafted. Yep, I should have been more specific that there was also 10 sq ft. of permeable land specified in the ordinance. I have received one reply from a gentleman in Florida who...

I figured it was a little out of the norm - but I worry about the birds that get given up. A Farm Rescue in Salem OR now gets 2-3 birds per month only 2 years after Portland implemented their ordinance.

Yes - the Denver ordinance is 'minimum space' number - and we are fighting for the larger space mostly to force people to pause and think about what they are doing. As the dogs and cats people have found out, there are too many people in the world who will think "oh, isn't a puppy / kitten /...

1 sq. foot per bird for chicken coop in a cold climate?

Hi everyone, thanks for this forum! I am a newbie, and I posted this on the newbie side, but thought I would cross-post it here - I'm a little short on time to affect the Denver, CO ordinance for backyard chickens. Denver, CO has an Urban Farm Animals (chickens, ducks, dwarf goats) bill...

Thank you all for all the welcome messages!! I love this forum! sonew123 - when you say 8-10 feet when not free ranging, I assume that is outdoors? How much space do you allow per bird for indoor / predator proof type shelter?

1 sq. foot per bird for chicken coop in a cold climate?

I found a link (that I didn't save) that the commercial space had been 'upgraded' to 18", or 1ft 6", which is what got me concerned about this. Maybe enough room in Southern States, but we have a lot of days that do not get above 40 degrees. Our average temp in the winter is warmer than Iowa...

1 sq. foot per bird for chicken coop in a cold climate?

Hi everyone, thanks for this forum! Denver, CO has an Urban Farm Animals (chickens, ducks, dwarf goats) bill pending that will probably pass. But having grown up in Iowa, the specifications for the coop size seem very small, but I will admit I haven't been in a chicken coop since I was 14...
