Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

Update: walking totally normally now. I never put the splint back on, I just let her have a quiet box with one roommate to emulate. Here she is now with that camera-shy roommate. I think the key was getting the inflammation down so the tendon could find its groove and be successfully splinted.

Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

Too soon for a proper update, but she just did a totally normal looking leg stretch behind her with the affected leg, and I almost had a heart attack, thinking everything was going to fall apart. Here she is standing tall with some attitude right after, though (attitude enough she might be a he...

Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

Does everybody think I should let her keep walking around now, or should I alternate walking with some splinting/chair time still? I’m nervous about the tendon slipping out again.

This is the B complex I’ve been using.

Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

Here is the leg (right leg) right now (you can see the raised tendon, instead of the flat wide look it has when slipped). It’s basically the same size as the other, whereas 4 days ago, it was much bigger. And here she is standing.

Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

I have been using B complex too, should have mentioned that. I’ve been using the liquid kind though, do you think the tablets would be better? I also have Poultry Cell and Nutridrench and she’s had a little of each of those also. Here she is in her chick chair. Not much to see, except that...

Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

I don’t have a picture of of the splint, but the splinting was very rudimentary. I stretched the leg straight and back just enough to be sure the tendon was in position, then secured it with cotton gauze under sports wrap tape (the white Johnson and Johnson kind from the drug store). I left her...

Slipped tendon treatment for 2 week old silkie

I noticed one of my then 9 day old silkies holding one of her legs up Sunday night. The hock joint was swollen and flat, she wouldn’t put weight on that leg, and I could feel the tendon had slipped to the outside of the leg. I could move it into place by straightening it out, but it would...

    First post, cross breeding question!

Hi Sylvie! Just wanted to update with results. Brabanter with frizzled cochin in front (they all have some version of dad’s coloring, half are frizzled), and with BSM in the back, solid blue. You helped me decide and your genetics are spot on. Thanks again!

Silkie chick puffy and standing around, weird neck movement

Just wanted to update for anyone else who finds this thread because they’re worried about the same symptoms. The chick is fine now, out in the coop with the others. In fact, I’m not sure which one it is anymore! They’ve all changed so much and I have a few whites. All are thriving now. Thanks...

What would a brabanter mix look like?

Hi there! Just curious how they turned out? I have some eggs in the incubator fertilized by a cream brabanter rooster. One of the hens is a blue splash marans, and the other is a white frizzled cochin. Very excited to meet the babies!

Silkie chick puffy and standing around, weird neck movement

Oh, that’s possible. I just started putting th grit in about two weeks ago when I introduced the eggs and then the spinach leaves, so they’re not used to having it around. I wondered if there’s a risk of them mistaking it for crumbles and eating too much. God, chicken parenting is as bad as...

Silkie chick puffy and standing around, weird neck movement

I’ll try to get a video of the neck movement. She wouldn’t perform for the camera last night, and she doesn’t seem to be doing it so far today.

Silkie chick puffy and standing around, weird neck movement

Her poops look okay to me, but I’ll attach a picture. Maybe a little small? If I try Corrid, is it okay to keep them on medicated feed, or should I swap out for unmedicated? I feel really clueless about crops and I’m never really sure how to evaluate them. Last night after she ate it felt...

Silkie chick puffy and standing around, weird neck movement

Oh darn, I thought spinach was supposed to be good. I threw them some leaves this week since they’re cooped up inside and don’t get to try grass or any other green things. Do you think that has caused an issue?
