    What to do?

Three weeks ago the neighbor's dogs killed two of my hens, an old mama Orpington and a 4 month Americauna. I still had the mature rooster, two 4 month roosters and one 4 month pullet. I gave away the mature rooster and purchased 3 almost 4 month pullets. On the advise of the breeder, I put...

hens hiding in the nesting boxes

I have 2 BO hens that stay all day in the nesting boxes hiding from the other chickens (definately not broody, will jump up and out of a box if another hen shows up). My coop is 8x12 with a total of 24 chickens in it, and they free range during the day. I feel so bad for these 2 girls...

    Nevadans?

Gaited Horse, Plumas-Sierra County Fair in Quincy, CA. The boys are in 4-H. (My favorite entry was thhe 5 month old RIR cockerall that was a pullet. Oops!) BTW, congrats on your Eagle, from the mother of 2 Eagle scouts.

    Nevadans?

Boy, be gone a week at the fair and I am totally lost! I just follow along and see what everyone is up to. We took 4 chickens to the fair....my middle son won his showmanship class and the 5 month old cockerall was best of show standard breed. While we were gone, 3 of the 4 eggs under the...

    Medicated or unmedicated chick feed

Thanks for the info. I saved a little of the medicated feed from the last group of feed store chicks, just in case these babies hatch. Guess I will feed them that (will probably only last a week with mama sharing) and then switch them over to the flock rasier. Appreciate the help!

Setting 43 silkie eggs at 11 anyone with me * PICS*

So I caught Zero going out to eat and dust bathe. We quickly grabbed the eggs and flashlight. All four look the same, just like the pictures of what they should look like. So far, so good! Ten days until

Roo or Hen..... PLEASE HELP ME for the sake of my kids!!!!

Day old chicks aren't a guarantee of sex either. I have two roosters that were sold to me as pullets at a day old. The hatcheries say they are 90% accurate, my accuracy rate is 1 roo per 8 chicks.

    Medicated or unmedicated chick feed

I have a broody sitting on 4 eggs. When they hatch, do I feed them medicated feed like my feedstore chicks? Is that okay for the hen, since she'll be living with them?

Setting 43 silkie eggs at 11 anyone with me * PICS*

Our broody is still sitting. She just sits in her trance unless I put scratch right on the edge of her nest box, then she wakes up and gobbles it down. I would love to candle the eggs, but don't want to disturb her. Hopefully all is well under here. We're finally getting heat, and it's so...

Setting 43 silkie eggs at 11 anyone with me * PICS*

Just gave my broody Orpington hen 4 eggs (they were layed today by the other girls). Didn't really plan on it, but since she's been broody a few days, we'll just see what happens. Hopefully they will hatch before my boys end up down at our county fair to show their roosters! Don't really need...

Teaching the showmanship bird to walk

So, the boys are going to show in the 4-H poultry classes. They really only want to show their roosters in the breed classes, but are required to do showmanship. There's no way those roosters are going to do showmanship! So now we have to enlist (and show) two of the pullets. The choices are...

    Black Australorp roo?

So, I can spot the Buff Orpington roos at a week or two old. This 7 week old Australorp has me concerned...I can't have another roo! I have gotten "Pullets" from the feed store 3 times, and if this one is a roo, I have gotten a roo each time. They say it's a 10% chance of them being sexed...

    Mixing the flocks

I have six 1 year old Buff Orpingtons hens, and nine 13 week old chicks. For several weeks, they have been free-ranging together during the day and in seperate quarters at night. The babies have access to their area during the day with their chick food, and the hens have their food in the...

    Nevadans?

Not a big crower, just when he thinks he needs to tell everyone he's handsome and his girls are pretty! He lives inside the barn at night, so I can't hear if he crows at sunrise. Some days he talks a lot when I let them out, but most days he is quiet. My neighbor's roo crows much, much more...
