It occurs to me that my Facebook and Livejournal friends are probably tired of hearing the eggsploits of my chickens, so I realized that I might want to start putting them here instead! What an awesome feature this is!
I'll start out with some introductions:
This is Lucy... short for Lucifer...
Sharpening knives has some art and some science in it.
The first thing that you should do is look at your knife blade. Look at it from all angles... down the blade from the tip, from the haft, from each side, from dead-on with a good light shining down on it. You want to look for irregularities...
Those are certainly testes... the kidneys are held in cavities in the pelvis along the spine. If you've ever eaten a chicken thigh, you'll notice the greyish-greenish tissue in that cavity... that's the kidney...
Perhaps the rotting testicle is the reason why that roo got so aggressive toward...
I'd strongly avoid using any petroleum product for future vespid destruction. First, they pollute the soil into which they are poured, even if you burn them. Sounds like that soil's also where your chooks feed... thus the chooks get to eat the residues. Mmm...
Secondly.... well... you found...
So the last couple days, our Lucy (RIR, supposedly about 3 years old) has been staying in the henhouse most of the time (we thought that she was just getting up late, after we'd gone off to work) and I noticed that she has a bit of a dirty butt (feces encrusted in the feathers under her vent)...

THIS!
You'll set YOUR mind at ease (your neighbors probably don't care at all or you would have heard about it already... unless they are like some of MY neighbors who'd rather grump to everyone BUT you about it) and you'll be making friends by dropping free eggs in their hands!

Cottage cheese goes with darned near anything.
Try chopping some of your favorite fruit into it. Peaches, pineapple, and pears are all perfect with it!
Tomatoes also complement it nicely and it makes a dandy dip when mixed with salsa.
Really, there are few things that it cannot complement...
This is exactly why I decided to bounce this idea off of y'all before I brought it up to them... *chuckle*
They have integrated pretty well with the other girls but, it IS getting on to fall (though we've only lost an hour of light or so) so I can understand the slow-down. I'll get some pics...
About a month ago, I found a person selling 6 Rhode Island Red "laying" hens.
They said that the hens were about 2.5 years old. They don't artificially extend their laying season with lights in the winter, so I expect about another year of eggs from these two girls.
One of them (Lucy)...
I use 145 degree water and dunk for 30 seconds and then test one of the pin feathers on the wing. If it doesn't come out VERY easily, I dunk again for 15 seconds and re-test. Repeat until the big wing feathers come out with very little effort and then pluck off!
As noted previously, make sure...
Tuna. Albacore, to be specific, fresh from the docks. WOW, they go NUTS for the stuff.
Apparently pizza, as well. Had dinner on the patio last night and came out of the house with a beer for myself and one for the girlfriend who was calling for help - she was surrounded by chickens who were...
Yesterday I found a paper-thin eggshell under my roosts with a splotch of yolk/white near it. I'm guessing it was from one of the two young pullets that haven't been laying yet but have no idea which one.
Now the anticipation of trying to find out which one is getting ready to lay is just...
