Transport to the processor-make a crate?

My hubby made a large crate using a poly tank that they use for ag chemicals. They usually have a wire cage around the outside. He cut a hole for a door in the side and made a door with a hinge on it. He made it for me to haul goats. I have fit 3 full size goats with plenty of room to move...

    Will mother "adopt" chicks?

I put all my babies in my silkie pen. They take turns brooding the babies. My roo is even pretty good with them. I love silkies!!

Buckeye Roo over Delaware Hens Meat-Type Cross Project

Jo Ann, I am sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience. I ended up with a bunch of roos last year and it was MAYHEM!!! That is how I became a believer in the cider vinegar in the water before hatching. Last hatch of 14 it looks like I have 1 roo. I hope your kids are not discouraged for...

    Dual Purpose

I also am curious about the best bird for DP. I am a hatchaholic and am wanting to raise my birds for meat as well as eggs. I am trying to keep my flock small, but my next hatch I am going to try keeping them in a pasture and close them at night. I got some dark cornish from the hatchery and...

JUNE 7TH Hatch date ~ looking for hatch buddies

Okay, I am very late to join. Mine are due to hatch the 5th or 6th of June. I had a spike in temps, which I hope does not harm my babies. They are Spitzhauben/silkie cross. The last batch hatched just last week and they are VERY cute chicks. They seem to be very mellow. I am hoping for more...

At what age did your silkie start laying eggs?

I thought that silkies lay later than other breeds. I have had my silkie living in the brooder with babies for months. She was making the noise that hens make when they lay. I thought that it could not be possible. She is just 5 months and she laid her first egg today. I was beyond...

    Silkie Behavior

I love my silkies, but they are kinda wild until they become adults. I have taken mine places where people think I have them trained. If you still have trouble, give them treats when you pick them up. Mine don't fly or run away.

Hello, my name is Jim and I am a hatchaholic!

Hello, My name is Kim...and I'm a hatch-a -holic. I have a homemade incubator. I will be curious to see how yours is set up. I am using a waterbed heater as a heat source. It holds temp and humidity pretty well. I brood them for a few days in there and it works great.

Buckeye Roo over Delaware Hens Meat-Type Cross Project

It was supposed to be increase your number of pullets. I am not great a record keeping. When I have a hatch of 18 birds maybe I get 1 or 2 roos. That is a lot easier for me to deal with. At one time I had 16 roos and that was insane to deal with the fighting. It is easier to get rid of the...

What's so special about Silkies? [got them!]

Thanks to all the silkie lovers. We started on accident with a hatchery surprise. We have lost a lot due to predators. I have hatched, raised, and lost many. I never had more than 3 at any time. I now have 23 in the brooder. They are staying there until they are much older. Our oldest...

    Laree's "I CAN'T STOP MYSELF FROM HATCHING!!!" Hatch-a-long

Wow!!! I feel right at home here. I am trying to get a 100% hatch on my homemade incubator. I hatched 15 out of 18 silkie eggs on Easter. It has been empty since then. I just found 16 eggs that are silkie X. I had to put them in the bator!! My DH is an enabler. He climbed the hay loft to...
