I use sand in the coop and rice hulls in the run.
It rained so much where I live this year. The rice hulls don’t mold and dry quickly. When kicked around the rice hulls stay on top, so poop, etc goes to bottom.
I use pavers on top of hardware cloth, as my foundation. Keeps them pretty dry...
I live the rice hulls. They dry quickly, if they get wet. They also stay on top, while poo and other stuff goes to bottom.
The chickens LOVE going through fresh rice hulls, looking for any rice left behind.
It is also compostable. Pretty easy to clean.
The older ones are a year old. The younger are about 9 months old.
I have a hen, my alpha, who keeps getting egg bound every time she eats too much protein. She is a big pig and eats faster than the others.
I hang herbs, broccoli and cucumber for them to peck at. And leave Brussel sprouts...
hello.
I have been struggling with my hens picking feathers, poo sticking to back feathers, and some combs that look dry and (this week) have slight blue tips.
They all eat well. Have bathing area with herbs, DE, wood ash and a hen bath powder (forgot the name, but packaged in white plastic...
How do you make your coop pitch black with ventilation?
Another crazy idea, if you have to close your coop ventilation...can you put an air purifier in the coop to help with ventilation? I know they make the air humid, so not sure if that would work.
I think the wild birds are waking mine up. They wild birds are pretty loud.
Sounds crazy, but I thought about putting a rain sound in the coop to drown out the bird noises.
They started bawking at 5:20am.
hello.
So the day before I went out of town, I noticed bumble foot on one of my hens. It was small and flat. (About size of pencil eraser.) I usually check them all every couple days, but hadn’t in a week.
I followed someone’s non-surgical approach. It was a lot harder then some of the...
I have seen some people make diapers out of face masks. The part that goes over the ears would be the part where their legs go through.
What if you cut a hole for the tail, but enough that the butt is covered?
I am having the same problem, but I think mine problem is a bored hen. Too much...
Mine do have access to a grain/crumble mix all day. I give them feed in the morning with a little bit of a mix of oats, cinnamon, raisin, coconut and cayenne powder.
I give them veggies in the afternoon, sometimes with worms, or fish.
Then fruit treat a few hours before bed. (Blueberries, or...
i have 13 chickens and I was wondering how much everyone feeds their flock.
I have read 1/3 cup of feed per chicken, unlimited greens, and 10% treats.
I am always worried I will over feed, or not feed enough.
How much do you feed your chickens? A bucket of scrapes, a bowl of veggies?
Thanks everyone. Great feedback.
So if I have one tested and they find something, should I treat the rest, too? Or test separately?
They are usually in the run. Sometimes I let them out in my back yard. Not sure what kind of parasites they could have pick up. They have eaten earthworms and I...
