At risk of losing my birds

My family and I are faced with some challenging choices. Currently I am living in Western PA, yet we are faced with potentially having to move back to our old house in Temple PA. (right outside the city of reading, Muhlenberg school district) where I have lived most of my life. Currently I have...

    Aviaries & safe plants

I have had mine for nearly a year. They were kept outside before in a cheap TSC chicken coop. It's roof caved in though, so I decided to make something 6 times bigger. Right now they are living in my brooder and i am itching to use the brooder for chicks and quail eggs again though. I also keep...

    Aviaries & safe plants

I was not going to include a sandbox, because a part of the aviary has very dusty soil. I thought about laying ashes down though, thoughts? Have you had any problem with snakes in this specific enclosure? That currently is my largest concern.

    Aviaries & safe plants

I started to build my quail aviary yesterday, and I plan to finish it without any cost. I simply do not like having the wire bottom cages and whatnot for an animal that seems much happier outside. So, my plans are to build it like a chicken run with a nest box to one side (more for shelter than...

    Egg Color?

Yes, but from my understanding the rooster might hold a white egg allele, but brown is dominant. Or so I was thinking. My knowledge isn't the greatest, nor the worst, but I like the extra opinions.

    Egg Color?

Tomorrow I plan to set 50 or so eggs into my incubator to sell chicks. Of these they come from a Barred rock rooster or a GC rooster. The hens I have with them are Barred rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Golden comets, and a Brahma. Now these babies will be a barnyard mix and I assume all offspring will...

    Chicken Compost?

I have fifteen birds soon making the jump to 35. they have a 20ft by 8ft run that we filled with leaves in the fall. It's gone from 2ft deep to one and a half. I rarely leave them in the run though as we have 164 acres. I started a separate compost pile with the goal of feeding them and...

    Chicken Compost?

I was thinking it would be varied too. they already get scraps and stuff so I am curious how different it would be.

    Chicken Compost?

Permaculture design is something I am big on. I have chickens already but I stumbled recently upon the prospect of chicken compost. Now it is intriguing to me,but I am curious how many chickens a large pile could feed. Or if it would be better to do several altogether. Also is it safe to use the...

    My Ducks Hatched!

I just hatched my first bunch of ducklings ever. Let me say it is so much harder to hatch them then chickens though, because of the wait. The extra week is a lot! Anyways I uploaded a video to YouTube of the ducklings in my incubator, If I am allowed to share that here is the link :)

I currently have 4 Cotournix quail, and am in search of more for a breeding/meat stock. I'm also particularly interested in different color morphs. Thank you all!

    Breeding options

From my knowledge the barred rock chicks are sexable at birth. I can get sex links though with th GC? That would be a fun option. I currently have everybody together so parents may be a guess if I just do a straight hatch. I was going to separate a few out though into breeding groups.

    Breeding options

So, I am going to do a fairly large hatch in the coming week(s) to get some chicks to give to friends and keep for myself. I have 3 buff hens, two barred rock hens, a Brahma and several production reds and golden comets. These are mainly my layers. I also will be adding a EE and a RiR hen fairly...

    Barred Rock x Buff Orpington

So, I am soon doing a hatch of my Barred rock rooster x Barred rock hens. I was thinking of also throwing in some Barred rooster x buff eggs. I know these won't sex link, but from my understanding chicks will all be black than as they grow a lot of orange will bleed through or be in the under...
