How long is a chicken productive as an egg layer? Our 22 chickens are about 1 1/2 years old, and have gradually decreased to just a few eggs a day. Is this normal? Is it time to get new chickens? Thanks
My hubby wants to fertilize the yard. We let the chickens free range a few hours during the day....and obviously I don't want them eating the fertilizer. Any suggestions?...besides keeping them cooped up?
I have a hen that has decided to go broody..... She will sit on any eggs she can find...I have to lift her up to gather eggs. I put a wooden egg under her. How long will she continue to act this way if she doesn't have a nest of eggs?
No, abdomen isn't bloated. When I sit her down, she sort of squats until I insist that she move.....then she walks normally......and hollars at me for making her move.

I don't think she's half bantam.....just a beginner. I have two I'm still waiting on to start laying, and I think that might have been one of them. Doesn't matter to me....I'm enjoying them all!
I've been getting a variety of sizes of eggs from the girls, Jumbo double yolkers quite often.....but boy was I surprised when I found this teeny weeny one!!
Kind of fun never knowing exactly what you are gonna find!
Why must you let the eggs cool on the counter before putting them in the frig? I'm new to egg laying too...and always looking for good advice. We are getting 9 a day now!!
My chickens have started laying about a month earlier than I projected. They were not fed a high protien diet, just purchased chick starter and then switched to grower feed. Their eggs are small....but from what I've learned, that is normal .... "pullet eggs", and will get bigger. They have...
