    California - Northern

Hey ya'll don't know if you heard but an egg business in Northern California went down so they're trying to rehome 1,800 hens. If anyone is interested, the website is here. http://animalplace.org/help-a-hen-rescue

    Rooster's First Aggression

He is! I picked him because what I read up on the breed was that they were known to kill feral cats and we have a lot of those around here. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try that next time.

    Rooster's First Aggression

He just started trying to crow and it's so cute, it's like he's going through puberty and his voice cracks. Well, today I got my first taste of his hormones when I picked up one of the hens. I've picked them up before without any trouble, but I think he took exception to me carrying her away...

    Will chickens always fight?

My flock is at 9 weeks and I was just wondering if they are always going to be picking fights with one another and chasing each other around. Or do they eventually settle down? They've all been together since hatching. Well, except for one who was added at about three weeks.

    I have to control myself!

I just want them to all grow up and start laying and I want to see how my little roo handles being the big boy I hope he is. I want them to breed and have them grow old and we can see what kind of little mutts that will show up. I want to see what our next rooster would look like. I want to see...

    Question for breeders

So I'm totally green to this. But are ya'll like dog breeders? Where, like.. say I wanted a Maran simply because I wanted to get some chocolate eggs in my flock. Since Marans are hard to come by from hatcheries, could I go to a breeder and inquire there? Do I have to sign paperwork saying I...

    California - Northern

:3 My chicks are starting to be comfortable with me picking them up. And it's about time seeing as how I've been transporting them back and forth between the brooder and their pen outside! I was tired of them all freaking out and running away and knocking things over when I would try to pick...

    California - Northern

I have some almost six-week-old chicks. 1 Dominique Rooster. 2 Dominique Pullets. 1 New Hampshire Red Pullet. 1 Buff Orpington Pullet. 1 Easter Egger Pullet. They're going out to the coop/run this Monday, their six week birthday. :) Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.

    I have to control myself!

Definitely is chicken math! They make me think of Pokemon. Like I just want to collect them all! And the problem is is that I'll most likely be living by myself or with maybe a roommate so it's not like I need seven chickens or anything, but I keep adding different breeds that I want! I'd have...

    I have to control myself!

So my current little flock were chosen for their temperament and egg production. Now, they're just reaching 6 weeks and are about to be put into the coop and run. But I'm already trying to plan my next flock. I say "next" because I'm living with my parents and I convinced them to get chickens...

    California - Northern

Hi! I don't know if Gilroy (20 minutes south of San Jose) counts as Northern California for most people, but here I am. :)

    Feed Containers - Thief Proof

Does anyone have any suggestions for some large feed containers that would be water-proof and thief-proof? I would go with simple garbage cans, but obviously those aren't very good for keeping raccoons or possums out and I'm worried about simple locking mechanisms because raccoons are too smart.

    Providing Feed for "Free Rangers"

So at the moment, my chicks are only five weeks. They go outside in a little pen during the day and have access to water at all times. Then at night, I bring them back in to go into their brooder, which has food in it. I woke up the next morning to put them outside to find they had eaten all of...

    When does roosting start?

Mine are at five weeks and I've had a wooden broom handle in the brooder for them since week 3, I think. They spend most of their day time outside, but at night they are brought in. They all really like jumping around on it, but I've only caught one sleeping on it at night, but she's also the...
