Hello,
I am Jim, and I raise Quail. I have started with Coturnix, California Valley, and Bobwhite. I purchased my eggs on EBAY, and hatched them in the incubators that I got on-line. It has been a wild ride, shooting from the hip, and learning as I went along. The biggest lesson learned so far...
Here is what I would do:
Use a 4-inch cable tie/zip tie to band the right leg of each bird that you see crow. This will identify your males. Do this daily, until all the ones that crow have a band on the right leg. Your Jumbo Browns can be sexed by coloration on the throat/breast. The males are...
Congratulations!
You had a successful hatch, and they look really healthy. You and the girls did a great job; you are on your way to having a full house of quail.
Sincerely, Jim from Danville
I have Styrofoam incubators of different models. One model had better designed sides, that were higher, and no chicks ever popped over the sides when I removed the lid. The other incubator has lower sides, and when the lid is removed, I have had chicks escape. I have learned to lift out one of...
The little guy may have popped out, over the top edge, and landed outside the incubator. Some incubators have sides low enough for this to occur, and others do not. Check around down below, just in case.
Quail are the cutest, and can be the most vicious creatures. I have never had pets that would kill each other like the quail. Maybe that is why they are able to evolve and multiply so rapidly. They kill the weakest; the strongest survive, and reproduce more, with the same temperament. All we can...
Coturnix Quail lay when about six weeks old, and have somewhere near 14 hours of light, and sufficient warmth. I believe Bobwhites will lay in the spring following after they hatch.
Hello,
I believe Coturnix Quail are the egg-laying champions of the world. Given mild weather, and 14 hours of light a day, up to 300 eggs per year can be expected from a healthy female Coturnix. Shorter hours of light, and colder temperatures, will reduce the egg production. Supplemental...
I hatched a Silver Lace Wyandotte last season. The chick was a sole, and lonely chick, so I put it in with the Quail Chicks. It was raised with the quail, up until the time it was too tall for the 8"high quail colony cages.
She now resides with the mini-lop rabbit, in the rabbit hutch. I don't...
Good golly,
You have the patience and love that only a mother could have. You must be a natural born nurse. It is remarkable that you devote the amount of time and care to your pets.
Your birds are very lucky, healthy, and happy, in my opinion.
I have tried hand-feeding wild birds when I was...
Hello,
I would put half the hens in a spare cage. The cage with an egg in it contains the layer, take half the birds out of that cage, and put them in another spare cage. Repeat the process, until you have one cage, with one bird, and an egg. The process will work, if you have spare cages, and a...
Hello,
I admire your ingenuity in building your own incubator. Does it have a thermostat? Is the light bulb the heat source? The fact that you were able to hatch canaries proves that it will hatch the quail. The quail chicks can feed themselves if you give them a dish of game bird crumbles, how...
Hello,
I have hatched many hundreds of Coturnix Quail eggs since May, and gave up on candling them, because the spotted eggs just don't give you a good view of what is going on in there. I have found it to be best to just cross my fingers, and hope for the best. What is the worst that could...
Some quail lay according to the season, and others, such as Coturnix Quail) will lay eggs all year, if they are given supplemental lighting, to provide 14 hours of light total. We need to know what type of quail you are inquiring about to answer your question please.
