Does anyone else notice a difference between their laying hens [of different breeds]? Which egg is better?
(is there really a difference or am I starting to loose my mind? lol
Oh, I absolutely notice a difference!!! I have 4 laying girls- an EE, Light Brahma, and 2 NH Reds. The EE's eggs are...
Ooooh- never heard of using pine tar! We have lots of pines on our property- maybe I could collect some!! But, I will try the feed and hardware stores too. Anything to save my poor hens' bum!
Yay!!!! My Light Brahma started laying TODAY and she is 21-22 weeks! Congrats! A side note for those of you that have been raising light brahmas for awhile, in your experience can their eggs be brownish-pink? I swear they're not the same color as my New Hamps' eggs.
Hi,
just lurking here to see how your bullied hens do. I agree taking the bully out of the run sounds like a good way to give those poor girls a break. I have a poor Ameraucana that has no tail as a result of being lowest in the peck order. I'm about to go buy some of that Anti-Pick Stuff...
Sounds like a broody hen to me. Especially if she gets all "clucky" with you. I have a couple broodies and when they even hear me tiptoe up to the henhouse they start making their warning sounds- "Stay out there- we're happy here!" 'Course, since this hen is new in your flock, it's hard to...
Envirogirl,
thanks for summing it up- I have 3 hens that do that "Bawk bawk bawk- Ba-KOCK!" thing and I know they're the ones that have started laying. Mainly because I spy on who's in the nest! But one hen is rather strange- or maybe not, depending on how you look at it- she does that sound...
Hi all,
thanks for the input! I'll have to take a look at those breeds. Also, here's a bigger pic of the chicken in question..that first one I put up was so tiny!

I have to admit I was elated to send my 1st off to kindergarten, but I still cried on the drive back home....I think I'll be a basket case when my youngest goes. I can only imagine the one and only child beginning school. But what a beautiful beginning for him, and how special that you were...
Hi,
I'm posting this for my friend who has what we've been calling a "mystery chicken!" He looks like a rooster. Back in May, my friend had ordered a bunch of Barred Rock and Golden Sex Link chicks from our local feed store, and she got home and found this little guy in the box! When he was...
Wow- now I'm really confused !!!! This is my first flock ever, too, so I'm still a newbie. I started out with 4 silkie chicks: 2 black, 2 blue. Our cat got one of the little blues when it was only days old. That was probably our only pullet! I guess I'll be on the safe side and hang on...
Thanks for the input! It was the comb and wattles on the "hen" that made me second-guess myself. I have a buyer lined up for "her" but told him I wanted to make sure I was not selling him a rooster. Darn. :o
Hi,
I have 3 black silkies 3 1/2 mos old. Two I am positive are roos, but there's one that has a thinner "poof" on top of its head that I think may be a hen? Or just a balder roo? She (he?) seems to have slightly smaller wattles and comb than her brothers. What do you think? The first two...
The bag is beautiful! My feed bags are 4-ply just like another posters are, but boy I wish they weren't. I recycle mine at our local transfer station. What brand do you get? And by the way, since we're all on the topic of feed bags, do they only come in paper and that woven/plastic stuff?
Hi,
I do have Tweak with the other chickens; I have around 20 birds total. No one picks on him, either! They used to, when he was the littlest. Since he's a cochin and a bantam, he was the tiniest chick I had. Luckily I bought a pair of them and I can compare his growth with the little hen...
