I think my girls are almost ready to start laying. All they need is some more daylight I figure.
Should I open the nest boxes that are in their hen house before they start laying? Or will this invite a mess in the nests?
I built most of my coop with lumber from one dumpster. Someone did a huge renovation, it was like I got all the wood from what was probably an attic floor.
There's not much I'll jump into a dumpster for but scrap wood is always tempting.
I've got three, eight week old BOs who will be moving out of the brooder next week. Their Henhouse is roughly 4x4x4 with two nest boxes inside. It's kind of tight in there but should be fine for my small flock.
Is there any reason to discourage them from getting comfy in the shaving filled...
Thanks for all the great wisdom friends of chickens!
I'll be roofing the run and think about sinking some kind of digging varmit deterrent. With any luck if the predator comes sniffen around the run the girls will be diggin' in the compost on the other side of the yard...
I've seen some wimpy fences around some of the runs around my house. I know that it's easier to build a fence just to keep the girls in and fortify the henhouse for security after dark. That's what I've done any way. We have some huge (bigger than my dog) raccoons that live in the storm...
So I built a small coop for my now three BOs. It's roughly 4x4x4 and sits on 30" stilts. When folks suggest roost height is it measured from the ground or the floor of the henhouse?
Kelly,
Don't be so modest, there is wisdom in your reply.
It really seems that there is not too much hard science involved in most chicken husbandry aside from : chicken need food and water.

My six 6.5 week old BOs have nearly ten pounds of starter mash left. Should I store it for the next generation or blend it with the bag of grower I need to get this week?
Thank you all for your wise replies.

Poultry staples, so thats what they're called. If you choose to use them I've found that needle nose vise grips are a savior for holding the thing as you nail it. A cats claw nail remover will make really quick work of removal.
After several weekends of coop building I'm a firm believer in...
Thank you MM hatchery for your "sexed" BOs. I kept six of 24 that I ordered for my first backyard flock. Three are sporting prominent combs and acting cocky. I'm glad in a way, because I'm already thinking about a different breed down the road.
My neighborhoods CCRs only allow for three...
