Proud mommy to college-aged twin sons and an active toddler. Over the years, we have been the caretakers of chinchillas, rabbits, parakeets, guinea pigs, hamsters, and cockatiels. We have scaled down to one black lab and a fish tank. Real soon, we will have 6 chickens, if our coop is ever...

Question about Large Black Ants in the Coop

I have large black ants in my house, mudroom, and outside. I brought my Rhode Island Red inside our mudroom and she would not eat the ants, but just kept stepping over them. I was so dismayed. I've never heard of a chicken not eating bugs....or ants! Maybe they taste bad? I was hoping the...

A Hawk! (And My Well Built Coop)

I have a question for LauraJean. We are frantically trying to finish our coop and are not sure what we should do for the outside ground. Should we horizontally lay wire from side to side (dig and remove the sod/grass to place the wire then add dirt on top and hope that grass grows fast?) or...

    Next Box Pattern

My husband is building our coop and we will have inside nest boxes. I have the idea of putting plastic kitty litter boxes of some sort of plastic structure inside the boxes, to make it easier to remove and clean them. Is this a good or bad idea?????? (like these Stanley nest stackables at...

what to use to seal/paint plywood coop?

I want to thank everyone for all the great ideas....my hubby is still building our coop and our 6 chickens are waiting at the seller's farm still. It is so nice to read all the posts and know that we are not in this totally alone (kind of blind, but not totally alone)

lost all 8 Silkies and Frizzles last night....Grrr

I'm also sorry to hear of your loss. Guess my husband was right buying the hardware cloth for the outdoor run.....though he is using chicken wire buried underground under their run. I am learning from everyone on the forums and hope to share more once I receive mine.

    Automatic doors on coop

Thanks-where did you buy the wooden eggs? Should I start a new forum each time I want to ask a Q? I was wondering if any of you knew where I could get rubber boots to wear outside/in the chicken coop--prefereably ones with chickens on them. THe PERFECT pair (with colorful chickens!) was on...

    Automatic doors on coop

Thank you everyone for all of the helpful replies! My husband is still building the coop (I think we went a little overboard--will post photos once he is done) for 6 chickens that are paid for but not yet brought home. I just can't imagine getting up at 6 am with a toddler every morning, even...

    Automatic doors on coop

Does anyone have automatic chicken coop doors to let their chickens out in the morning? How do you like them.? I would actually like to find a "remote-controlled" door, but have none so far on the Internet. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

New Member in New York State, with questions....

Hi to everyone! I do not yet have chickens...am hoping that my husband will give me the go-ahead next spring. I've been reading all I can on the subject and we love buying eggs from a small local farm down the road. I see chickens for sale and for free often on Craigslist and wonder if this...
