    Momma "weening" babies???

We had our first natural hatch the beginning of June. She hatched out 6 and we have ended up with 4. My question is this... will a mother hen leave her chicks? She doesn't want to have anything to do with them now. Will even pick on them as if to put them in their pecking order.

    Mites!!!!

Mites are gone.We brought mom in the house the other day to see what she would do with them. She pecked them a little and made some chirping noise and one by one they went under her!!!! She's a protective mom!!! Have them in a box in the house and she hops out to go outside to go to the...

I'm so eggsited!!!! My little OEGB laid 9 eggs under a lawn mower in the yard and stayed there till they hatched. Thought that something would get her being outside that long, but the only thing that got to her were mites. First chick hatched on the 27th. last was two days ago. We had been...

    Mites!!!!

The stuff I got seems to have worked for the most part. Total number of chicks is 6. One is under her and the other 5 are in the house. Trying to figure out the best time to reintroduce them. Any ideas?

    Mites!!!!

Thanks!!! Just got back from town with some dust. Took it out and put some in my hand (had gloves on) and rubbed some on her. She has two new babies under her. They're still wet or I would've taken them. I have one in the house right now. She has laid them under a lawn mower in the yard...

    New hatchling

While the baby is in the house, should I put something in with it, i.e stuffed animal, etc. Will she take the chick back if we leave it in the house? She also has mites and trying to figure out what the heck to do.

    Mites!!!!

My question is this, I have a broody sitting on eggs that are hatching (she's hatched out one already). There are mites EVERYWHERE!!! She's NOT in the coop. She's under a lawn mower. How do I treat this and keep the babies safe too?

    New hatchling

DH went and pulled the baby out. She has two more poking thru the eggs. Baby is currently in the house with lamp on it. Silly question.... what's DE? And should I put something in with the new baby to keep it company? Will mom have anything to do with it later?

    New hatchling

So, I haven't been on here in a while. I have a momma hen that has been diligently sitting on 9 eggs under a lawn mower in our yard. Outside by herself and has hatched out one of her 9. AND, they made it through the night. My question is this, do I make something for her and the baby(s), and...

    Ducks in Winter

I've been wondering the same thing with ducks and winter water. I live in southwest Wisconsin and i have a natural spring fed creek on the property. Found my hen on New Years Eve swimming in the creek! We have a little more snow now and was wondering if she was going to need water to swim...

    The first egg!!!

I have read that about not eating the first egg. Can't remember as to why. We are getting about 5-6 eggs a day from our chickens, and I have scrambled up their first eggs and fed them back to the chickens. Will probably do the same for the duck eggs. Not sure if the ducks will actually EAT...

    The first egg!!!

This is what I found this morning when I let the chickens and ducks out of the coop this morning! My Rouen hen is about 6months old. In this pic I put one of my chicken eggs next to it for size comparision. So egg-cited!!!

    First egg!!!

Thank you!!!! My year old hens have quit laying for the moment, so this is a nice surprise! Like I said, this egg looks nothing like their eggs. It was small for a standard size (I thought) so hoping that they will get larger.
