I mean when they stop laying due to age. My rhode island reds stopped right before three years and am sure some of it is due to days shortening and some were molting. but i really feel they are done. they were doing the lay one egg every other day trick before stopping. I really enjoyed the...
Hi, thanks I will try that. I have 6 also one being a rooster and he seems to be a fairly good roo. We think we know who the culprit is but they do seem to pick on one in particular, worse than the others. I tried seperating her when we were gone but didn't do it that long. I did notice she got...
I have had the picking problem off and on since early winter. Someone suggested cat food but what kind? Dry or canned? I assume to increase the protein in their diet? What else can improve the protein in their diet? Thanks for any tips.
I know I hate the picking problem, it seems to come and go and can be very frustrating. When I had chickens years ago i don't remember these types of problems, it is very discouraging.
Hi, thanks for all the hints. I tried cabbage but they didn't like it. I heard the protein thing also about the pecking, I try to give them leftover meat once in a while. They do eat it. I also have the calcium out there and had run out. I will just keep trying. They are funny though . They come...
I know this might sound crazy to some but do any of you do something for the chickens over the long cold winter so they don't get into pecking each other or something. Something to entertain them when they are stuck in the coop on the stormy or real cold days? I seem to have one that starts...
Hi, thanks,I found another site and alot of them were talking about them being bored and some throw pine boughs in and they enjoy that or leaves, or even a rotting piece of wood. I also saw hang a cabbage. I did let them out of their pen for about a half an hour 2 days ago and followed them...
Yesterday I wrote that it appeared one of my chickens was getting pecked pretty bad from one in particular other chicken. I seperated her came home from work and went to the 5 others and it appears one other chicken is being pecked. she has some feathers missing and she was sitting on a roost...
It cracks me up because about 20 years ago I had chickens, the little bantams and I just had them, I don't remember being all freaked out about them, in fact a couple of them used to love to sit high in one of the pine trees all the time, didn't want to come down sometimes for night. Thanks for...
OK thanks. Is that one of your unconventional ways? I read your page on roology and found it quite interesting. I think I have a pretty good rooster, he seems to respect me but do have that little cautious side that keeps my eye on him, they do have those awfully long claws, lol. He seems to let...
thanks for the tips, sound good, I should just go get that pine tar the next chance I get. I could be wrong but felt it was a good sign that she was chasing the one chicken I assume who started pecking.
we have rhode island reds, 1 rooster, 5 hens. they are about 8 months old, it is a guess. I feed them layer food. they also love grapes and the grass and all that. I am in new england and was keeping the light on so we would get eggs and read this could cause a problem. I have noticed her...
I noticed a few days ago one of my chickens had feathers off her back near her rump. One chicken in particular is pecking her. I have read about the cannabilism, she does have some red open areas where they can see it . I read put blue food coloring and vinegar in the water. When we put her down...
I am worrying a little about my rhode island reds. I am in the northeast and it has been in the teens the past few nights. We have the heater for the water. There is a thermometer in there and it seems to be about 6 to 8 degrees warmer inside than the outside. The coop is insulated. But it has...
