Yeah… nothing will stop them once they start. Unfortunately I speak from experience.
The only thing that finally ended it was me covering the entire thing in metal flashing.
I don’t understand why they think it’s so great, but they do. My house foundation is covered in painted styrofoam insulation - once the chickens figured that out, it was a fun time.
I've seen people wrap it with hardware cloth pretty high (say 4-5 ft) and that seems to keep cats out. I have only 3 ft of chicken wire wrapping my kiddy pool, but my cat/dogs won't be in the room with them unless they're supervised, and there's no way my cat is bright enough to get in there anyway!
They do not currently have any artificial heat on them. They have PLENTY of ventilation - the entire top of the henhouse is open and the door is also open all the time. (See picture above - the entire space between the white henhouse wall to the pvc roofing panel is open space.) I have never...
We just went out there and threw a blanket over the henhouse section to hopefully keep a little more heat in. Should I do anything in particular to treat the frostbite? We might get a few more cold nights this year, and I do have a radiant heat panel I could throw in there for just the coldest...
Sadly, I think a few of my hens have some minor frostbite on the tips of their combs. I have two buff orpingtons, an easter egger and a speckled sussex, and the only one unaffected is the easter egger (benefits of a pea comb!). The affected hens have a clear line a few millimeters from the tips...
Yep, they'll call you day of if there are any issues with your order.... I started getting nervous when it was 4pm and I still hadn't gotten a shipping notification.
I do wish that I ordered directly through Metzer now though... I got impatient and ordered through My Pet Chicken because their availability was up sooner, and I've had good customer service interactions with them in the past. They were still very nice and accomodating, but apparently Metzer...
So excited for duckling pictures!
Mine were supposed to come this week, but unfortunately Metzer apparently had an underhatch on both Cayugas and Welsh Harlequins, and my order got postponed to March 1. They said that they have had poor hatches the last few weeks, so hopefully your order isn't...
