Thanks for all the great responses.... if the marans are mixed between BCM's and CM's are their any indicators that would give me clues to what breed their parents were as they mature? If the parents might be a different breed mixed with CM's are their any indicators as they mature? If they...
:DHi Chris, Would the females possibly be a mix breed cuckoo or do you think they're a general mixed breed? The reason I ask is that the gentleman that sold them to me said they were all of the same hatch and that they were cuckoo marans. I didn't pay much for them and the females can always...
Is a Silver Cuckoo Marans supposed to have gold or brown on their hackles and bleeding through their feathers?
this one has the most off colors coming in
all seemed to have some of this coloring
I got these marans at chicken meet locally @ 8 weeks of age... 2 males and 5 females... they are...
:)Hello all, Just wanted to try my hand at this picture thing....Also if anyone wanted to comment on the quality of my rooster "Midnight", I wouldn't mind at all. (He's just for breeding my little flock not for show). He's a Black Orpington from a breeder and his hatch mates (brother's?) were...
Hi Krys, please pardon the intrusion in this thread but your quote gave me a question... The (Co) gene how would it effect something such as a cuckoo maran in respect to whether or not the allele? has Co/Co or possibly Co/Co+?. Would the columbian restrictor cause more crisp blurred barring on...
(tk poultry) I'm going to assume ( I know dangerous) that my Black Orp roo is mixed black/lav for possible breeding purposes, not to sell or show, just to be creative while breeding for eggs and meat. I'm playing with the ideas of possible mixes with my buff orpingtons and some black/lav hens...
(TK Poultry) Thanks for the info... I'm kinda leaning towards thinking that he's not a true Extended Black and your info seams to back that up. So you think that he probably carries both Black and Lav gene instead of Double Black? I wonder how that would mix with other colors of orpington...
Hello all, Very newbie question about genetics here.... Is there any way to tell if a rooster is Extended Black (E/E) without waiting for the results of breeding? I have a Black Orpington Rooster from a breeder of Black / Lav Orpingtons. I'm not sure of what constitutes vigor but he's...
Hello, I've read that eggs are okay to eat up to a couple of days at room temp., but the longest we've left the eggs is one day out on the counter and then put them in the fridge and they are fine. We usually check for eggs once or twice a day depending on when we're doing errands near the hen...
Thank you all for the feedback... I may just keep them seperated up to 8 weeks to keep the chicks on grower and the hens on layer the extra two weeks then do as Cats Critters suggests...this sight is great...always help when needed....
:cool:Hello, How do I continue to feed my chicks grower feed when I integrate my chicks into the layer flock around six to eight weeks and the layer hens eat layer feed?
Good Luck with your broodies.... Sounds like you have a vvveeerrryyy busy spring coming.... How late in the season do you let little speck try her second hatch? I have a 3 year old Buff Orp that is insanely broody due to hatch starting today, unfortunately I was to dense for the past 2 years to...
Today is day 20 for my Buff Orpington "Mrs. Broody", with her first batch of eggs...! Out of the 13 she started with she's still trying to hatch 11 (One dropped, one candled clear on day 14). The eggs are bbs orpingtons from locked hearts. I can't wait....It's my first hatch as well...

Nice to have, even good to have but not necessary. I would agree that it is the best way to go.
I have had successful hatches without the hens being in their own pen. Two were hens sharing the same part of the coop although they were separated from the main coop and the rest of the...
