Wheaten Marans are definitely not normally mean. I have had them for 15+ years and they are annoyingly friendly and nice pets for kids. There are some Black Copper roosters that can get a little rank, but mean wheaten roosters are far and few between.
Please be careful when accusing hatcheries of "sending sick chicks". Although we don't ship chicks, we hear this all the time.
Unless diagnosed by a poultry lab, one can usually assume the most likely cause of death / illness is the result of stress by shipping. I am not saying things don't...
Thanks for the suggestion Dan! I had looked at the breeders list, and there may be some in KS, but there are no listings for MN, IA, WI or the Dakotas in the colors I am looking for. I will keep trying!
Hi Everyone -
Is there anyone on this thread in MN or surrounding states that would have quality Large Fowl Wheaten Ameraucana eggs or chicks? Looking for something with show potential and a bluer egg color is a must and really only interested in Wheaten, or possibly Lavender. Willing to...
I only ordered egg layers and meat chickens from them. The easter eggers were big, the layers average, but consistently laid a nice sized egg consistent in color.

What am I missing? They look identical. I was thinking the wheaten had more of a sun-kissed hackle, but is that always the case? I have 13 roos, 10 are supposed to be wheaten, 3 are BBR. Want to only keep 3 wheatens...
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
You couldn't pay me $5000 to get birds from McMurray ever again. After using them for a few years because they were a close hatchery, I literally would prefer to not have chickens over getting chickens from them. As far as rating MM stock, they are worse as far as health concerns. Many die...
Just an FYI, a good NPIP certified breeder will never let you "visit" them due to bio-security. You shouldn't be allowed into their breeding facility and the chicks should be held in a separate location. If they are NPIP certified, they have already gone through a visual inspection by a...
Anyone who claims they are getting 8s or 9s from a wheaten marans in the US is not likely using the French standard. It is also unlikely to consistently get a 7.
I have hatched hundreds if not thousands of Marans over the years from many different breeders and many different lines. Although...
