Let me start with "Eagle", my <1YO Australorp I raised from a chick. Beginning the middle of the winter, she started losing some of her feathers off of her back. It got to be a little more, but at the same time my rooster became more aggressive with the hens, and I just assumed since she was...
The "real" Momma cast it out of the nest (I was watching carefully) so I brought it in under the warming lights. I was encouraged when it took a couple of drops of water, but the mother must have known best, because it died about 20 minutes later.
I think it was the other mother chicken that...
You might remember that last week, I lost 2 chicks in-shell because the eggs were due to hatch and the Mother Hen got off the nest to be with the 2 other chicks that had hatched two days before.
I had another brood of eggs that I knew weren't all laid at the same time, but only one broody hen...
I am no worried.
I had a brood of 6 eggs. The first hatched at 20 days, then another on day 21. On day 22 I had 2 pip, then they died in-shell.
I thought it was because the mother had not kept them warm enough.
Now I have 3 eggs under another hen (different eggs, different hen) that pipped...
Here's the two that have hatched so far, and I have a pip on the bottom left egg as well. This sure is a long, drawn-out hatch - this is 3 days after the first one opened up! (Day 23) The white ones were added to the nest later by other hens, so I will be moving those to the other hen shortly.
I've got six that are due to hatch today, and 3 more that are due to hatch sometime in the next week. Thanks to the other hens in the coop, they were so kind as to volunteer some extra eggs in the nest and I didn't check until a week later. I have a stand-by broody hen that's going to sit on...
Thank yoU!
It's nice to know, because I have an endless supply of these planer shavings. I had been told it had to be soft wood, but never knew the reason. To my knowledge, he hasn't used cedar, so I should be fine.
I am just wondering, because my FIL does a lot of woodwork and has PILES of shavings (not chips) from different woods - some hard, some soft, none of it treated. They are these little curlies of shavings, and feel very soft, there are no sharp edges like in the chips that I buy in the bag. Why...
I noticed a couple of days ago that my 3WO chick has deformed toes. They curl sideways instead of the regular direction. They have stuck so close to the mother hen that I didn't get to look closer before.
It doesn't seem to affect her walking around and staying with the rest of the brood...
I am certainly no expert. My chicks are with their Momma, and they were cordoned off in the regular pen from the other chickens.
About a week ago, I opened the door to their secluded area and watched to see what happened. The chicks all stayed with Momma hen, and none of the other chickens...
Well, I thought that perhaps my son was a little rough with him and "turned" him bad. I have been doing the opposite approach and only being calm with him, etc. I haven't gotten daring enough to try to feed him out of my hand (he nearly broke my hand one time). As an instinct, when he...
