Thank you all! Momma and Nora are doing well. Probably will be going home this evening. Born 12/23/14 at 12:40pm, 7lbs 8 ounces, 20 ounces long. Full head of hair like me when I was a baby. So proud of Laurel and happy to be a dad of a precious baby girl. Grandparents are at home...
Just to give some contrast to my post the other day about weights. This is NOT one of Kathy's line of birds, but from my own line. There are lots of things wrong with him but he weighs 8.75lbs and is about 6 months old. He is a meaty boy. As far as type, he is off... he is too long, his back...
From what I've read of the Marans standard they are supposed to be 7lb cockerels and 8lb cocks, which is 1/2lb lighter than Delawares. The standard doesn't give any time frames for growth for either breed but I would think the Delawares should be ready to process in around 20-24 weeks. That's...
We actually order from a local hatchery some birds that they call a "plymouth rock" line. They pretty much look like cornish x to me but they do take 10 weeks to grow out, are much more active than the cornish rock x we've had in the past. The cuckoo marans I processed was 5.24lbs. Based on...
We get a custom mix and we found out the minerals that were being used in it were expired. It was an accidental mix up when the feed store sold the mixing equipment to another local farm that is now doing our custom mixes. It's been fixed now but it took a toll on my birds this year.
I don't but that's not very good weights for a 7 month old bird. Again, it could have been a feed problem.
I have 2 cockerels left that I can weigh. I kept them b/c they were a little bigger/heavier than these others.
I processed 4 Delaware cockerels yesterday and to be honest I'm a little disappointed with their weights. These boys were 7 months old. Processed weights were 3.1lbs, 4.24lbs, 4.03lbs, and 4.2lbs. I did have a feed issue this year but I also processed a Cuckoo Marans cockerel that weighed...
Interesting! I hope my Florida weather helps :) I plan on crossing her line with my line as they mature a little faster so hopefully that will help. I'll keep track and see how that goes.
These are the older chicks I got from you and they are from Bert. I just realized these are 7 months old, shouldn't I be getting eggs by now?! I'm sure the shorter days are throwing them off.
I don't have photos of the birds that came from the eggs I got from you, which should be all Ernie.
