She's still hanging in there. Since I didn't have a tube or baby bird food last night, I syringe fed her a liquid slurry -- last night mixed water with a little wet cat food (I know it's not good for chickens to have much cat food), and this morning I mixed water with layer pellets, grapes...
This is great advice and a very good tutorial post. Thank you!
Since I won't be able to obtain these supplies until tomorrow, I wonder if it would be helpful and okay for me to
use her antibiotic syringe to give her water -- or water mixed with some food. I have a high power blender that I can...
I wonder if there is anything I should do to force my very sick hen to drink or eat.
2 days ago she went to an avian vet who gave her antibiotics and dewormers.... to cover any potential pathogenic microbes.
She was very weak that day (and pale and 1/2 her normal weight) but she was eating and...
Update --
My hen with the prolapsed cloaca is doing very well.
I took her to an avian vet b/c she is a pet. I had not know there was such a person near my until I checked!
First, she had a wound beside the prolapse which was the source of maggots, not worms. I should have researched a little...
Is it safe to eat eggs from a chicken with round worms? I think they are round worms.
I know my chicken with prolapse has worms -- not sure about the rest -- probably though, right??
My daughter read in Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens that the eggs should not be eaten.
If this is true, we'll...
Yes, thank you. I did eventually figure that out.
I've also heard that Diatomatceous Earth can be used as a wormer -- and you can continue eating the eggs.
Thank you! Regarding egg dumping, what is the purpose of this? is there harm in eating these eggs? I'm wondering if I should purge the eggs I have in my fridge already.
Not sure which chickens they came from or if the other chickens have worms, but I guess I can assume they all have worms...
One of our 3.5 year old girls has a prolapsed vent, cloaca -- about 1 inch.
We cleaned her up, applied some honey and Prep H, tucked it back in and discovered worms.
She voided a little while I was tucking.
She's now in a crate in the garrage away from the other ladies.
We'll check her in the...
Chris, when you say you never use DE, does that mean you think it's best not to? I don't know very much about it, but I believe I've heard that some people use it to avoid worms of whatever sorts chickens can get.
Our girls are in their coop more than i would like -- b/c of my daughter's...
Thanks everyone! Very helpful!
I think I'll use the metal can and raise it off the ground since we have lots of high heat and humidity here in the summer.
I think it'll be easier for my kids to scoop if I opt not to use a liner, so I'll hold off on the liner for now.
: )
Noel
After finding mouse poo in our feed and millet, I bought a metal can for feed and seed treat storage.
One person suggested a plastic liner to help avoid moister condensation and mold.
And to mix in some diatemacious earth (sp) which I have. I have 2 kinds -- one is food grade and contains...
Thanks!
We have pine shavings b/c I use it on the floor of the coop. The only reason I put wheat straw in the nesting boxes is b/c, well, I guess I've seen others do it, so I did it too!
: )
Noel
Since a family member is allergic to gluten which is a protein found in wheat, I'm thinking I should change our nesting box liner material from wheat straw to something else.
I've seen references to pine shavings. We have that.
Anything else people like for this purpose???
And are there any...
Thanks so much to both of you!
That makes sense --
the timing was just right to make us really scratch our heads and wonder about those young girls.
I feel better now knowing they're not growing up too fast!
: )
Noel
We found a 1 inch long egg in a nesting box!!!
We have several laying hens, just over a year old, and 3 pullets that are only 11 weeks old.
We also have a hen who's small b/c she's a cross beak Americauna -- she can't eat as well as the other hens, and she gets picked on.
I'm not actually sure...
