I have 13 chickens that I need to give away or sell (12 hens, 1 rooster). I have someone that is interested in taking some of them. I'm hesitant to separate the flock. They've been together here with us for over a year now. Do I have a valid concern, or will they be just fine if separated? The...
Currently, our coop sits directly on the ground. A friend reccomended we lay cut dry grass down. She has and says her chickens love it. Are there any advantages ar disadvanteges to laying down a bed of dry grass, or does it really matter at all? Thanks ahead for your answers.
I have what is most likely a dumb question. We're butchering a few birds tomorrow and are going to freeze them. Should I put them in the refridgerator for a couple of days first in order to let the meat tenderize first before I freeze them, or can I freeze them right away and let them tenderize...

I'm trying to decide whether to buy a plastic waterer/heater all in one combo, or a metal waterer with a separate heater. This will be our first winter coming up having chickens. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

The coop is very well ventilated with more than enough room for the 14 chickens and 1 guinea. I understand the concerns regarding the food and water. I'm going to see what I can do to find someone who can check on them at least once or twice while we're gone.
We're first time chicken owners and I have a question. We need to go away for a few days and have no one to watch the chickens. I was wondering if we left plenty of food and water in the coop, will they be alright? They are free range and used to running around most of the day. We'll be gone for...
I have two Red Leghorns, both the same age (about 2 1/2 - 3 months old). One is significantly smaller than the other. In fact, she's the smallest bird out of 16 birds of the same age. I've never raised chickens before and was wondering if she'll grow to normal size, lay normal sized eggs, etc.
A neighbor has been keeping chickens in a home made coop that sits right on the ground with no base. The chickens have been in there for about two months. They poop there, sleep there, and eat in there. He throws the food right on the same ground they poop on and they eat off of it. He is going...
