I'll only get chicks if I can find lavender orps. FFH had them before. I also have an eye out for pea fowl. ;)

I just received an e-mail from TSC announcing that Chick Days is close. I'm sure you all were aware of that. Now I have to decide if I want to raise some fresh chicks or wait for the Imlay City sale later this spring. Adding to this is the desire to raise some pheasants for my habitat...

When I got the permit to build my garage, the building inspector said that since I was on a sandy area I only had to trench down 2 feet for the foundation. The contractor brought his big Cat excavator with a ditch bucket. At less than 12 inches down he hit clay and rock so dense that the...

T-posts are expensive and I'm a cheap bast... Anyway, I had all of those posts that I got from the mill scraps. Slabs and posts enough to last for the last 2 years. Plus pallets galore. I'm either a good recycle guy or I'm a junkman. Chickens are happy and secure. That's all thatmatters.

Funny you mention that. When I had the electricity run to the garage they brought out a Ditch Witch for the trench. In less than 10 feet, it was broken. They came back with a "commercial" grade trencher. A tracked machine as big as a bulldozer and equipped with an auxiliary back-hoe. The...

Sure got cold overnight. Woke up to around 3 inches of snow. Just came in from plowing. Driveways are done and paths to the garage and coop. It's 100 feet to both coop and garage. On days like this I wish they were closer, like attached, closer. :) Hauling water out every day gets kind of...

Similar to the photos. The potassium reacts or binds to the calcium on the shell. I forget where I read about it. I seem to be forgetting a lot of things lately. :old

I think it is just a glitch. There are 2 groups. The older hens have been laying for over a year and the young birds have been steady for about 6 months. I've just hadn't seen that before. Although I've had similar deposits of potassium after the hens have eaten bananas. These girls haven't...

This is the extra deposit on the shell.

A nice 4-6 inches of snow by the time I got home. Could get more overnight. Or so they say. In any case I plowed the driveway and shoveled the deck. Fun times driving the tractor after dark. Doctor appointment tomorrow then PT. Roads should be clear by then. Interesting thing going on...

Thanks for the tips. I'll try the warm rice thing. Not sure just yet how I can get it in my gloves. The exercises seem to be helping a little bit. The underlying problem is the joints. I have to go through PT before insurance will allow an MRI to pinpoint the root cause. Rules, ugh...

Oh she is really good. I just frustrate her at every turn. I simply can't bend or move like she wants. None of her tricks can get my muscles to relax. She has 30 some years doing this and she says I'm the worst she's ever seen. At my most relaxed I'm still a board.

One nice thing about the crappy part-time job I work is the amount of food that they throw away. Lots of past sell buy or expired food of all types. I can usually dumpster dive a grocery bag of stuff for the dogs and chickens (and me) every day I work. I brought home dry pizza and cauliflower...

Pinkie trigger finger is a self-diagnosis. It's curled/bent at an odd angle with a bit of pain. PT is going well. I just don't seem to be a good patient. My PTA says that she has never seen a patient as stiff and inflexible as me. The chiropractor said the same thing.
