I have three chickens that I acquired from a friend 16 months ago. They were about 18 months to 2 years. Very seldom did I get 3 eggs in a day. But I did get 1 or 2 eggs. Well, 2 of them have not laid an egg in over 3 months. I keep thinking that tomorrow I'll see an egg from these two. Is it...
In a previous thread I asked about chickens eating their own eggs. Still happening but with less frequency. I live with it. However, of the 3 chickens I have one lays a bluish-white egg while the other 2 lay light brown eggs which are the eggs that get eaten. The white egg never is eaten. I...
Has anyone tried feeding their chickens ground crab leg shells.
We had a crab feed last night and I thought instead of throwing the empty crab shells from the legs away what if I ground them and fed them to my chickens. However, I thought it best to check with the experts first. Any comments?
I have 3 chickens: 1 Ameraucana, 1 Road Island Red, and 1 that looks like a Ancona.
It's the Ancona look-like that is sick. This morning she was not in the coop area when I brought them food. She's always there and is the biggest eater and more aggressive. She was in a roosting section inside...
The shell is the only thing that's eaten; yoke and whites (?) in a puddle. I don't have a dog but a few wild squirrels have been around for a longer time then the chickens. I doubt they are slipping through the 1" chicken wire and they are not the hole boring type.
Any other suggestions?
I know this question has been asked before:
The last 4-5 eggs laid have been eaten by my chickens. I don't know which one(s) is/are the guilty one since I have 3 chickens. I don't have the time to stand around to catch the culprit and if I did I probably wouldn't. I've read that the eat them...
Thanks for the upfront and honest response.
I have plenty of other foods to choose from for breakfast.
When I embarked on the journey I probably was overly enthusiastic about getting one egg per day per chicken or 21/week. I thought I could share with my family those that I could not eat...
I've been informed that hens don't lay much during the winter. I don't live in a cold climate (San Francisco bay area) so heat isn't as serious an issue as cold/snow areas. However, I do miss a (somewhat) steady flow of eggs (I have only 3 hens).
What can I do that to my coop/roosting area that...
This is a two part question:
1) What causes a "little" specks of blood in an egg and is it save to eat?
2) I found about 10 (+/-) drops of blood just outside the roosting area about a week after the specks of blood in the egg. Since I have 3 hens I do not know which one bled. There were no...
Does the type, quantity, mixture of food affect the behavior of chickens? I am talking about table scraps not store bought chicken feed. I have chicken feed also in a feeder within the coop. I have 3 chickens which at one time all had been pecked at. Now one has her feathers back while the other...
I have a few 11 gallon trash bags half full of chicken poop mixed with whatever comes up when I scoop poop.
I am interested in composting the poop. I would like to hear from those that have successfully done so.
Does anyone have the Chicken Waterer by Brite Tap? I read about it in the San Francisco Chronicle about 2 weeks ago. It seemed like a good sanitary way to provide water for chickens. However, I have problems in getting my chickens to take to it. I've tried what the product manufacturer suggests...
