I just had my first hatch yesterday, all welsummers, and I have two that are light in color - with almost no markings. I do have a RIR, but none of the eggs I collected for the incubator were hers...or I would think this was a cross. I do have a welsummer hen that is light red colored -...
Thanks you guys. My DH just got home. We have a 22, and will probably go that route. I don't think it's bruising because it extends quite a bit from the wound, it's warm, and she's not eating or pooping much. She is sitting hunched over, wings down, or lying on her side. Not going to be...
I had a bad fox attack on Thursday morning as an owl watched. Three hens with puncture wounds (bites) are now in the house. I sprayed their wounds with bactine! Two are eating, drinking, interacting with me, recovering. One is not. I lifted her out of her cage this morning to take another...
Thanks. I will try the finger pecking - that's a good idea. I'll also try to pick her up first thing and pet her, and see if that helps too, and give her first dibs at treats. She is pretty high in the flock pecking order, and was bold even as a chick.
And, yes, this may be one of those, it...
I have 2 buff brahma banty hens in a mixed flock. Sweetums is wonderful and gentle - and sweet. Snots is mean to me, and I'm wondering how to get her to stop. I've never been mean to her, and I'd like to keep her. She pecks me, and it's to the point where she's almost drawing blood. This...
Thanks everyone for all the info - especially the coloring. She is a different color than my other wellies, which is why I thought, hoped, she might be a roo. Well, I'll watch for eggs!
I'm located in upstate NY, not close enough to pick up a very nice rooster... Rats again!
Wow! Your Moose is gorgeous. Absolutely striking! Thanks for letting me know. But now I'm *so* disappointed. Rats! Plus, I need to rename her. Promethius just won't work for a hen!
I mistakenly posted to the wrong forum, so I will repost here. Sorry.
My welsummer is 5 months old but doesn't have any rooster feathers yet, so now I'm not sure if he's a roo. His legs are thicker than the hens, and his coloring is more red. As a chick, the V on top of his head was...
I think this welsummer is a roo, but he's 5 months old now and hasn't gotten any rooster feathers on his saddle or his tail. As a chick, the V on his head was different than the hens. His legs seem thicker than the other welsummers, and his coloring is more red. Is he a rooster? He looks...
It worked! I placed an egg in front of her, she looked at it, and by time I went to the back of the coop to peek in the window, she had moved it under her. The other girls are now eating yogurt and she is sitting on the egg.
Time to research broody hens! She'll be glad to know I have a roo...
My one year old silver spangled hamburg hen has been unwilling to leave the nest box since yesterday afternoon. She has a sort of glazed look in her eyes. When I lift her out of the nest box, she pecks at food on the ground. We thought having her walk around outside might help. She went...
