I found my six month old rooster on the chicken coop floor last week, alive with head movement and eyes open although completely lame in the legs/lowerbody. A few hours later he was dead. Prior to this he was a healthy young man, had just began to crow in the morning and enjoyed chasing...
We had a day time visit from Mr Fox on Saturday. He took my rooster and a hen while they were out free ranging.
I would like to know the chances of the eggs that are being laid now by my 2 remaining hens still being fertile.
It would be nice to incubate them and get son out of my lost soldier...

I know this has probably been asked a million times but it's my first season keeping hens and the weather forecast this week predicts a drop to 5 degrees F.
Electrical heating is not an option so will they be ok from their own heat?

I just want to add that my solution has been to build a run for my hens and only let them free range when someone is at home.
Buzzards (the common European kind) get used to routines and know when to strike so I believe that releasing them on a more irregular basis also helps.
I only had a rooster and 2 hens and have just introduced 2 more hens, and was wondering if they will stick with the others when I let them out?
