Thanks for your reply. I was referring mainly to dealing with health issues (such as blocked crop or bumblefoot) without panicking and also to setting up and properly maintaining their coop and run.
Hi,
I rehomed three chickens in September that I had raised for a year and a half. I was (and am) attached to them, so I was a hard decision. I think it was the right one though, as it was getting to the point where it was causing my parents more stress than pleasure. And I was unsure about...
Thanks for your feedback. I notified the couple that took them and offered to help in any way I can. The lady said that they are keeping an eye on it. She also sounds like she has had experience with chickens. So, not the way I wanted our chicken keeping venture to end, but hopefully all...
Here you go. I'm hoping it's just bruising and not infected (I didn't see any signs of redness, swelling, or tenderness). I should say that the three chickens in question have been rehomed (I did let the people know about the possible foot issues). If you do think this is infected and will...
On a related note, does anyone have an idea how to modify my water set up to prevent her reinjuring herself. I suspect she injured herself kicking our water buckets. Besides these, I do have a couple nipple waterers, assuming the chickens will use them.
Is this bumblefoot? If so, does she need surgery, or is there a chance I could get by with soaking? She is going to my coworker's in September, and I would like to have her in good health by then.
Update - I'm pretty sure based on feedback I've gotten that it is bumblefoot. The poultry vet...
I will keep that in mind if I do dust them. So far, I haven't seen anything to make me think they have mites or lice, so maybe I've been lucky:)
I'm hoping whatever's going on is not chicken related and will let you know what I find out.
I've had a mild cough the past few weeks, and my mother was panicking (unecessarily, I think) that I might have caught histoplasmosis from taking care of our chickens. I plan to check into testing to appease her.
This does beg the question though, of when/if I should be wearing a mask to take...
Thanks, I appreciate any help I can get..
If it was my bird or birds
I'd give them a soaking bath for 20 minutes in warm water making sure water covers the vent._ will do
I'd feed them some scrambled eggs, and frozen peas...
chop up some finely chopped garlic clove and add it to the eggs...-...
The feathers around one of my chicken's vent always seem to have dried stuff on them, and don't clean up very well or stay clean very long with water alone. Lately they've been damp as well as messy - Not sure if that's related to the hot weather and drinking a lot. It does seem to have a...
Thanks for the reply. What I was seeing wasn't especially stinky and looked more like water with a small amount of brown stuff. I will post a picture if I can.
Hi, her tail was wet again tonight, so not sure what to think. I think what I need help on is deciding if this sounds like a bacterial/worm issue (in which case I will have her fecaled), a yeast issue (in which case she probably needs the vet visit) or nothing to worry about (my Dad thinks so...
So, I think I figured out why I was thinking vent gleet with my messy tail girl. Her vent feathers were damp when I put her to bed tonight and did seem to have a bit of an off smell to them (that's happened before also). Her vent looked normal as best I can determine last time I gave her a...
