    Single Silkie in December

Oh, I'd also worry about the stranger chicken attacking the babies. We could separate them till they're used to each other, but would rather not.

    Single Silkie in December

Thanks! I never thought of doing both. So you don't think the weather is a concern? And do you think the Silkie will accept the chicks if she's not broody at the moment?

    Single Silkie in December

We had a backyard flock of three hens but a foster dog managed to sneak in their chicken yard and kill two of them. We are down to one Silkie who goes broody VERY frequently, but it is also December (but in Central Texas, so it doesn't get very cold). I'm wondering what the best course of...

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Update - we are down to three chicks now. Two of the three are sick - one of them, the barred rock who was the second to get sick. She actually seems to be recovering. Not sure if we should go ahead and cull or keep going until we're sure they're not going to recover.

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

No trembling except for one chick once, briefly. The description does sound consistent with my situation otherwise. :( I suppose we will have to put down the other sickies if there's no improvement after Corid and vitamins. Is the encephalomyelitis vaccination readily available? Maybe we can...

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Update: We have put down two of the eight chicks. One felt very cold to the touch and was no longer eating and drinking. The other was stumbling badly and seemed to have a paralyzed neck - her head was down and she would somersault whenever she tried to move. Two are still going strong without...

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

6 of 8 chicks sick now. So it has been 5-6 days since the first chick started showing symptoms, and they've been on Corid for a day now (after a useless course of LS-50). Is giving them vitamins at the same time (to hedge our bets) a no-no? I gave them some vitamins by dropper but then read that...

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Ugh, now 5 of 8 chicks ... no real changes of symptoms in the first two that got sick either, just still stumbling, sitting most of the time. Interestingly our silkie is still going strong (so far, knock on wood) and she is the only unvaccinated one. I am at a loss for what to do. Obviously the...

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Chuckstuck, a couple posters here recommended Corid. Can chicks this young get worms? They are only 3 weeks old.

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Update - Now it looks like four of our eight chicks have these symptoms. Very upsetting since these are our first chickens. Bought some Corid today but am not feeling confident it will help, especially since all the droppings look normal.

Sick 3 week old chick. can't stand up, flops around.

Hi, I don't have any insight for you except to take a look at my thread, since I'm in a similar situation. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/906795/sick-or-injured-3-week-old-chick-what-could-the-problem-be Good luck!

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Update: we have a barred plymouth rock that also seemed a bit lethargic/nonreactive to reaching hands over a day, so we quarantined her too. The first sick chick is still eating, drinking, and pooping fine, but still stumbling and not getting up very much; the plymouth rock (sick chick #2) may...

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

I got her to drink this morning, and got her to poop on a solid surface. Maybe I'll take it in for a float test today. Does this look like diarrhea?

Sick or Injured 3 week old chick - what could the problem be?

Thanks Eggcessive, we are in a hot climate and the room temp is 75-80 without any heat lamp, I was just reluctant to turn off the heat lamp since it was all the way up to the ceiling already. I have turned it off and will keep an eye on them. They were still mostly hanging out in the light and...
