    Chicken Leg in my egg?!

Thanks for that link Imp, although you're right there isn't much more info. I wish I knew more about it, at least now I have a name. As far as identifying which bird, well that's not going to happen. They've all been crazy on the laying cycle because of so much molting going on. I've also...

    Chicken Leg in my egg?!

It must have hurt, it was definitely a big egg. I didn't cut it open, didn't think to (which disappoints me now), but it was hard like a bone. The outside felt like flesh, maybe skin? I don't know for sure. Besides this "thing" the egg had a yolk and a white too.

    Chicken Leg in my egg?!

When I first saw this: I Thought I was going to get a 3 yolk egg. When I opened it up I got this: I thought I was going to crack this egg open and have a big fat omelette, not a buffalo wing. Has anyone come across this? Does anyone have an explanation? I mean I've had meat spots...

    Chicken-proof your garden?

Not sure what kind of chickens you have, but mine don't jump too high for food, it's funny to watch em try though .

    Chicken-proof your garden?

I scold them every time they get into something, chase them out, walk away. Ten minutes later I'm scolding them again. Eventually it'll be 2 hours, or 4 maybe, but who really has the patience? If you don't now you will soon enough. Fencing works great, but there are benefits to having your...

My name is Damien and I live in Salt Lake City, UT. I've been raising chickens since May 2010 and I'd have to say they are the best pets I've had. I love them so much I often tell them a bedtime story - Are You My Mother by: P.D. Eastman. My family thinks I'm weird because I hug and kiss my...

    thinking of buying a grinder...

You shouldn't need to grind it, their gizzard will do that. I've read it's easier to digest when it is cracked but unless you are supplying all of their food I wouldn't worry about it. Mixing in a few pounds of home grown whole corn would be fine. Now if you're talking about an acre of corn...

    Letting chickens forage ONLY?

Quote: From what I've read in The Omnivore's Dilemma, it's more because we feed ruminants and other animals, who aren't designed to eat grain, too much grain. Grains have a higher Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio than greens. Once this becomes an imbalance in diets of the animals we eat, and...

    Letting chickens forage ONLY?

I'd shoot for the most varied and pasture based diet I could supply, while still maintaining 16% protein and plenty of energy to keep up weight and production with whole grains. Basically everything you get from a standard layer feed, without the feed.

PROBIOTICS for you and your chickens

This may already be in the thread somewhere, but there's a lot of pages so I'll ask anyway. How much of the whey product can I give my chickens. I currently have 12 hens and they'll go through a bowl (2cups?) in no time flat. I usually have about that much every other day. Is it ok to give...

What are differences between buying from a hatchery versus a breeder?

Quote: What breed are you looking for? we are happy to help I guess I really don't know. I'm mostly concerned with the short production life of my hatchery birds. Instead I want a bird that will put a decent number eggs on the table (less is ok) for many years. I don't like the idea of...
