Just realized that my beautiful young White Leghorn is a rooster and I can't have roosters here in Pleasant Hill. Any ideas on where I might find him a home? I'm calling the feed store as the next step, but thougth I would throw it out there to you all!
I had ordered some fertile barred rock eggs for my broody hen to hatch and there was an 'extra" egg in the batch that was white. It has now hatched (2 weeks ago) and the feathers are coming in white and it has a yellow/orangish comb and legs. I have no idea what it is?? Seems to be taller and...
I have a hen who went broody and since we did not have any roosters, ordered 4 fertile eggs for her to set. Only two hatched and one of those died the first day. Its been about 4 days from the hatch and after candling and float testing the other 2 eggs we have determined they are not viable...
So...searched and found that your post is exactly what my dilemma is. Can I ask what you did?? I have a coop that is about 4' off the ground as well (with a ramp that leads up to it). I have a broody hen in the nest with eggs in it right now and am agonizing about whether or not to move her...
LOL! I put the eggs back under her earlier, so I will keep my fingers crossed that she doesn't decide she wants to play musical nests! Thanks for the reply.
My 9 month old Wyandotte went broody about 5 days ago. She chose the favorite nesting box of all my chickens and every day the other 3 would get up in there and lay their eggs and every day I would take the eggs out of the box. Yesterday, I found her in a different nesting box and actually...
Lost my seemingly perfectly healthy 22 wk old Black Sex Link on Monday after a day of no eating, very little drinking, poop that looked like pale yellow egg gook with blood in it, lethargy. The vet had no concrete idea of what was wrong, but the only thing that seemed to fit was Egg Yolk...
I'm pretty new to this, but I have already figured out that if I have a question or concern, I look for a Speckledhen post first now. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your humor with the rest of us!

They gave her an injection of Reglan (not sure if thats an antibiotic or not) and sent us home with Baytril.
As far as the necropsy...my husband disposed of her before I even saw that they do that for free here in CA...
A very sad day...My 22 wk old Black Sex Link went from her usual fun, feisty self to a very sick chicken overnight. We woke yesterday to find her lethargic, not interested in food at all and drinking very little. She then passed what looked just like an egg without a shell but very bloody...
1) What type of bird , age and weight. Black Sex Link, 22 weeks.
2) What is the behavior, exactly. Lethargic, standing or laying in one spot not moving, not eating, drinking little, labored breathing. Laid what looked to be a shell less egg with blood in it this morning. Vent appeared...
Help! I have a 22 wk old Black Sex Link who is not acting right today. Very lethargic, drinking alot but not interested in food at all. It looks like she may have laid an egg without shell and with blood and mucus in it. Her comb went from being bright red yesterday to a pale pink today. I...
