    Any person doing Cross sultan?

Sorry I know this is a older thread. I've been away a while. I did some crosses and was successful getting colored sultans by 3rd generation. Then looking at all my chickens I decided I far preferred the white ones lol.. I did keep one I call a dalmation and another who is a dirty white. I...

Mama hen unhappy with new chicks

My experience with introducing new chicks to a broody mom is that broody knows the colors of her chicks. I put a chipmunk color, black, and a white chick with a broody who hatched white chicks. Immediately the chipmunk was dispatched, no chance of me stopping it, and the black was treated...

    Hand feeding a picky cockatiel

What color is she? White face Lutio and cinnamons are known for bald spots. It's more noticeable when they are babies but as adults most of the bare spot is covered by the crest. You can still see a little of his bald spot. Is this what you mean by she's missing a little crest?

    Hand feeding a picky cockatiel

Use a spoon. Get a pair of pliers and someone with strong hands and bend the oval part into a slightly rounded triangle. It feels more like a beak to them. Chances are your bird is going lite getting ready to fledge. They will lower their food intake before flying to lighten up on weight...

    the sultan thread

You are going to love them. It shouldn't take long to get the poof on silkies from the sultans. The issue I see is vulture hocks, I think silkies are not supposed to have them. But if it's for your own enjoyment, then ENJOY :) I personally love vulture hocks on all feather leg breeds but...

    Dogs Protecting Chickens

Some dogs are just fine with chickens or other birds from day one, no training. Others will never understand, that's my opinion. We had a English springer spaniel and she was not a normal hyper dog ever. She always just ignored the chickens after her first sniff. She never bothered to slow...

    ISO chicken hatching eggs. Florida

I'm on Lake O (close), I have sultans and sultan/standard cochin mixes. They lay lots of eggs, even the sultans. You are more than welcome to eggs or possibly even chicks.

The Mix and Matches Breeding Project Thread

UPDATE I've been away for a while but my project has gone better than expected for so short of a time invested in it. Because of my limited space and number of chickens I may have not got my parents correct...But, I can guess. Out of a standard cochin barred male and sultan hen I got a...

    Eating feathers

I don't think they eat feathers for the feather itself. If you happen to see a plucked feather it has a gooey bloody bit at the end of the shaft. I think that's what the chickens are after. They just have to eat the entire feather to get to it. I watched a mama hen check a feather she lost...

    Eating feathers

If you watch them they are most likely looking at the bloody, meaty end of the feather. If its a old feather that naturally molted they are less likely to eat it. A fresh, plucked feather is what they want, one that still had a blood supply. Just from my experience, they are less likely to...

How my hens deal with Florida summers

Yes they are.:D Sultans have a bad rap about egg laying and broodiness, it's undeserved. I have 9 sultan hens and get 6-8 eggs a day. I've even had a few go broody and raise some chicks. Everyone needs at least one sultan. They are the sweetest hens and even the roosters are not too bad.

How my hens deal with Florida summers

My girls have found that the drain from the A/C puts out cold water. They take turns standing in it to cool off. Very smart of them actually but terrible for feet feathers!! Apparently they also made a mud puddle and cool off standing in that too. :(

It occurred to me.. crazy egg idea

It could be a little bit of the problem but most likely not all of it. The eggs probably were just too old.

It occurred to me.. crazy egg idea

Just did a candle of the chilled eggs. There was no development in any. No early deaths, just failure to even start on all. It's most likely due to the amount of time I had refrigerated them. It may be better to wait until my young roosters hit the spot closer to 100 percent of the time...

It occurred to me.. crazy egg idea

Well after pulling clear eggs (young roosters are not hitting the spot all the time) I had room to shove about a dozen refrigerated eggs into 2 incubators. The eggs are about 3 weeks old and from my Old rooster who did hit the spot most of the time. The eggs sat in a bowl on the lowest shelf...
