Silkie

Pros: Super cute, unique, soft, little (can be a pro and a con at the same time!)
Cons: Small, so easy targets for Hawks and other prey, as well as other flock members, lowest on the pecking order, take a TON of time to warm up to you
I started off with 2 silkies, one black, one white. The white one, Marshmallow, had her head and right wing ripped off by a hawk about 2 weeks ago. :( Now we just have Smokey left. Both I have had since about a week old and they were handled daily but still remained very afraid and skittish. It's very interesting, since the white one died, the black one has become much more people friendly and will actually somewhat accept being pet and can be picked up without much fuss. I often feel bad for her, as her and the white silkie which died were constant buddies and kind of their own group, often isolating themselves from the rest of the flock. Now that it is just the black one, she still is often by herself.

Pros: Good protector, High in the pecking order, Chases off other birds that come into the yard
Cons: Not very people friendly, growls, aggressive around food
My Buff Orphington has been raised from a baby and was handled almost daily and still growls anytime someone comes near her to pet or pick her up. She is the highest in the pecking order of the 6 and will actively chase off any bird that comes into the yard (little brown common birds to bid doves and pigeons) and keeps the 2 newly obtained Americanas we just got who like to pick on the babies of the flock. She also gets very feisty when it comes to food and will assault you if you have something she wants! haha

Pros: Pretty
Cons: Aggressive, they pick on the other birds in the flock
I have 3 Americanas, one I raised from a baby, and she is second in the pecking order. She will tolerate me being around and sometimes allows me to pet her without a fuss, and she was handled daily since about a week old. We just obtained 2 black Americanas from a lady after one of our original flock silkies was killed by a hawk, and they are always picking on the smallest ones, IE, the little ones will be sleeping and they will go over and attack them. Wondering how I can stop this. I am not very fond of Americanas so far and we have more of those in our flock than any other. :(
Pros: Incredibly friendly, attention whore, wants to be held constantly! :)
Cons: She is lower on the pecking order and lets others bully her
My RIR is the sweetest chicken alive. She is ecstatic to see me everyday (multiple times a day), squeaks like crazy when she sees me, abandons whatever she is doing and runs full speed whenever she hears my voice, *loves* to be held, stroked, and rubbed, constantly falls asleep in my arms and lap, jumps on my back and shoulders, lays on my feet, comes when I call her, snuggles up to my body, and will actually throw a fit if I do not pick her up when she wants (she will squeal and squeak, chase me and rub up against my legs and jump at me if I ignore her) and she loves to eat my hair, haha. She actually flew into the window screen because I was talking to her thru the open window yesterday!! She was excited to see me and wanted to be in my arms!! My others- silkie, americana and buff orphington couldn't care less about me.
