Brahma

The Brahma is an Asiatic breed of chicken. The first Brahmas were brought to the United States in...
Pros: Gorgeous, Loving, Good Foragers
Cons: None yet
These are my first batch of chickens. I started with three separate breeds - 2 Light Brahmas, 2 Delawares and 2 Easter Eggers. Of the six the Brahmas were immediately my favorites. They are the most adorable. They are definitely the most friendly and the sweetest. This is important since I have two small boys. The girls are coming up on four weeks old, and the Brahmas are the only ones that will allow the boys (2 and 4 years old) to pet them without having to have me chase them down and hold them. They are the first two to investigate new things - they were the first to use the roost in the brooder, the first out of the box when I let them outside the first time and they are almost always the first to try out any new treats I toss in the brooder. I have been trying to do photo documentation of their growth each week for future reference, but the Brahmas would rather take a nap on my hand than stand and be photographed. One of the two frequently falls asleep in my hand or on my knee when I sit with them in the coop. They are both extremely gentle with the other chickens, tolerant of being picked on but don't let the others walk all over them either. When they're in the run, they're the ones that spend the most time foraging and testing out what's edible (which is apparently everything) and what isn't. All in all, they seem to be exactly what I was looking for in a chicken. Too early to tell how good of layers they'll be but so far I'm happy with them - and am planning on increasing the number of Brahmas in my flock as soon as finances allow for more birds (or I "accidentally forget" to collect eggs and they "accidentally" get hatched).

One potential con: They have shown a natural propensity for being good diggers. For me, this is a bonus as it saves me time in the garden digging and turning the compost but for a more suburban setting it could prove an annoyance as a 10-12lb bird can make a pretty big hole.

All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend Brahmas - esp. if it's your first flock or if you have small children.

Pros: Great personality, friendly, fluffy, positive attitude, gets along fabulously with others chickens
Cons: No complaints from me!
My Brahmas are by a long ways my favorite chickens! They are very friendly, always come up to me when I enter the coop! They will eat treats right out of my hands, and like to sit on my knees while I watch the rest of my flock. I would recommend Brahmas to anyone looking into getting chickens. They're great for beginners!
Pros: Gentle, lovey, wants you to hold her
Cons: Sometimes her fluffy feet get dirty. A small price to pay to look fancy everyday!
We thought she was a HE, and named her Tyrell because of her ghetto-fabulous feet! The name stuck. Tyrell is our little gentle giant. I brought her in the house yesterday and fed her peanuts on the couch!!! She runs and you just have to laugh, those thundering thighs... She was in the White Leghorn bin at TSC when she was a chick, and I picked her out because I saw a bit of black on one wing. What a delightful surprise! I wish I had 10 more just like her. I found an egg in the coop that was GIGANTIC, and I think it must be hers. She thinks she's a dog, and I just love her.
Pros: gentle giant, huge eggs
Cons: not the best egg layer
My brahma is sweet and still lays an egg 3-4 days.

Pros: Absolutely gorgeous
Cons: Eats a ton, very messy, poor layer, aggressive with humans and chickens, a bully, hogs the roost, can clear a tall fence with clipped wings
I recently bought a Gold Standard Brahma hen. She is absolutely stunning, and is one of the most beautiful chickens I have ever seen. But she just isn't worth it. The only reason I haven't placed an ad to find her a good home is because she is bonded to my Marans hen, whom I absolutely adore. Maybe she'll develop some more redeeming traits. But right now, that seems doubtful.

Pros: smart, friendly, beautiful
Cons: roos can be aggressive
these are my first set of chickens and i wouldnt change it for the world!! they are very smart chickens ..... dig a lot but it is so cute when they do!! love to dust its like their favorite thing to do... and they are very excepting of other chickens!!! great beginner birds!!!
Pros: Friendliness, hardy, smart (as far as chickens go, lol)
Cons: None.
My little Phoenix was a light brahma; she was THE sweestest I've ever had so far. She would hop right onto my lap when I sat down with them, and was perfectly content to just stay there until you wanted her to get down. She was also very smart, and the escape artist of the crew of 2011, as I call them, haha. Bigfoot, a buff brahma, was also very sweet. If I had room for more chickens, these would be one of the first I'd get.
Pros: Sweet, friendly, good with other chickens
Cons: Super fluffy (not a con if you live somewhere cold)
Brahmas are great birds. I own three Light Brahmas, a cockerel "Tom Cruise" and two pullets, "Angolina Jolie" and "Anne Hathaway." Tom is the sweetest bird I have ever met, he likes to cuddle up to my neck when I hold him. The girls are more stand-offish but still very sweet. Beautiful chickens, with plenty of personality. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for friendly backyard pets.
Pros: Great personalities,big,cutecalm
Cons: Tend to get bullied sometimes.
I am glad we tried them.
Really like them.
Pros: Friendly, Docile, Like to Roost, Good Layers
Cons: Not Broody
I love LOVE love my Brahmas. They lay large, nicely shaped, light brown eggs. They get along with all my other breeds- even though they are the largest. I have 2 white/black that I bought as adults at an auction and I am raising 6 more Buff. The buff little ones are 3 months old now and free ranging during the day with all the others. When I’m outside they follow me around- which I find adorable. Great birds!!!
Pros: Incredibly sweet, seem hardy, gorgeous, very gentle, feathery legs
Cons: Those feathery legs can be hard to keep clean!
So far, I love my new brahma chicks! I got 2 yesterday, a buff and a dark. The buff (Gwynnevere) is the sweetest thing and sleeps in my lap! The dark (Ember) is also very nice but I'm trying not to get too attached as she is a foster chick! They are very smart, brave little chicks. The dark was the first to figure out how to use the chick feeder, shortly followed by the buff. I would get more in a heartbeat!

Pros: Friendly, Gentle, Kind
Cons: A very big apetite
They're great started birds. I love how gentle and friendly they are. They're also hardy little birds and do well in the cold.
Pros: Friendly, sweet, adorable, cold-hardy, (You really don't want to hear the rest... There's too many.)
Cons: Roos can be aggressive sometimes.
I have a Buff Brahma hen, and Maple is the sweetest thing ever! She will follow me everywhere, and she will stay by my side and not do anything until I leave. Roos can sometimes be aggressive, as I had 3 who sometimes flew at me. Brahmas hens are the best chickens for children, and anyone who likes to go out and play with their hens.
Pros: big eggs very calm friendly BIG pretty fluff balls
Cons: cant think of one
Wasnt sure what breeds to get at first but liked my first so much now i have 4 colors of Brahmas
Light ,Buff and Laced sliver& gold
I love their big fat fluffy bodys and their gentle calm manner and cold hardiness Summer they all get the hose on a thin spray in the run when its 100 + but they were fine and laid all the way thru
By the way eventually eggs became XX large eggs

I wond on ly 3 breeds and Brahmas are my favorite

Pros: Lays more eggs in the winter than any other bird I have
Cons: Feathery Feet hard to clean
I love my Brahma hen! She is so hardy, and escaped an eagle's grasp with only a scratch on her back! Was being taken away but the eagle got distracted and dropped her. Feathery feet ar not so easy to take of though. I gave them a bath and she had bumblefoot without me even knowing. But she always gives me one egg a day including the winter time, we don't even have to put a heat lamp in the hen house for her!
Pros: Large
Cons: None
Large
I loved these birds but all 3 I had turned out to be roos. I would love to get some more in the future.

Pros: Broody
I have both a hen and a rooster of the Dark Brahma breed. The hen first went broody at 9 months old. She sat on an empty nest for 4 weeks. I tried giving her eggs but she repeatedly rejected them. The rooster is MASSIVE (at least twice the size of the hen)! He is the biggest rooster I have ever had in my flock.

Pros: Very pretty, easy going gals
Cons: Smallish eggs
Compared to my Production Red, the eggs of my Brahma's are small, but they are productive. They are quite good at hiding and avoiding predators. My two are mix breeds but are mostly Brahma. One is white and one is light brown. The white one does not have feathers on her feet. They are tolerant and easy going.

Our Brahmas are wonderfully calm, easygoing birds. They put up with challenges well and yet hold their own. (Their adorableness doesn't hurt, either.)
