Cochin

Cochins came from China in the 19th Century. They were recognized by the APA in 1874. They were...
Pros: Sweet, fluffy and cute....lays sweet little brown eggs
Cons: My Bantam has fits of broodiness quite often...gets picked on by my standard-sized girls...feet can get dirty.
I have a Buff Bantam Cochin who was given to me...she is a sweet, active, and bubbly little bird but she is a little daft....she gets picked on by my standard sized girls and goes into "broody mode" frequently...I keep egg layers mostly so I would tend not to get a Cochin again for that reason alone, but I love her fluffy plumage and her feet, although they tend to get dirty...her little eggs are SUPER adorable too.

Pros: friendly and fluffy, confine well, fun to watch
Cons: large sweet birds are heavy eaters and poop accordingly
Easy going, we are so glad we researched and chose these girls as our backyard pet chicken breed they've been really great. Sweet and friendly, docile and generally not flighty or loud. A bit slower to learn routines but eager to please for treats ;)
The heavy leg and foot feathering makes health inspections a bit more challenging and feet can seem to be harder to keep clean and dry but really Cochin have been a perfect starter breed for us!
Pros: Super sweet, good layers, large so would make good meat birds, love their people, large enough that birds of prey and hawks won't mess with them
Cons: Not overly broody, feet can get dirty, you'll want more!
I had Cochins for awhile, and I loved them dearly. They always wanted to be with their people and thought they belonged in the house with us! Our one bantam hen even enjoyed perching on your shoulder. She was also the only one to hatch eggs, as although the other hens took turns sitting on eggs, they didn't mind us keeping the eggs and didn't sit on them for long periods of time.
Pros: Calm, friendly, gorgeous
Cons: feet may get dirty
I have a four month old golden partridge cochin and she is extremely friendly, she'll always jump onto my back and when I pick her up she snuggles right into me.
Pros: Great pets, loving, friendly, good brooders
Cons: Leg feathers get a bit messy
This is a very great breed for starters and for kids--they're sweet and gentle and hardly ever get ruffled. I had one boy that would let me lay him on his back and rub his belly; he was such a sweetheart. They're regular layers, good brooders, and great mothers. These birds certainly have a special place in my heart. :)
Pros: Gorgeous birds, get along with others
Cons: None

This is Dexter
Pros: Pretty, gets along well with hens of the same age
Cons: Will attack any chicken who isn't an egg-mate.
I got three of these at TSC during chick days and at first I was pleased since they look so pretty. One turned out to be a roo who was quite aggressive before he was even full grown so I gave him away. Of the other two, one was a frizzle and the other had smooth feathers. The one with smooth feathers is extremely nasty to all of the other chicks that are not a part of the group that she came home with. In fact, she has actively attacked some of the other pullets anytime the cockerels of the younger group isn't looking. Fortunately the two I have already learned to watch after their girls vigilantly and will chase her and her partner in crime off anytime they see them getting too close. I had thought that them being three month old bantams that they'd be more submissive but they definitely not. I have gotten a new group of chicks this week and if they have not calmed down by the time they are big enough to run loose in the run with the rest of the chickens these two will be going to freezer camp.
Pros: our girls are pretty sweet and lay pretty well
Cons: one of them is mean to other girls when giving treats.
They are pretty sweet and fluffy. They don't mind being held and lay pretty often I have more cochins then any other breed.
Pros: Friendly, Smart, Personable
Cons: none
I had quite a few breeds at one time. Now I have 3 cochins! I have had them a little over a year and they are great! My kids and even my husband love toting them around or bending down and petting them, I get tickled as some one mentioned in one of the reviews, they rocket squat and wait for their pet.It took them awhile to start laying but since they began they lay pretty faithfully each day and we have nice sized eggs, some large, most are a big medium. One of them lays twice a day, morning and late afternoon, They do tend to get broody but no rooster so I just get her eggs and make her get out of the coop and peck around my tomatoes. Great natural bug defense!

Pros: Good with children. Can't fly well. Hens are good mothers.
Cons: Feet get wet and make them cold. Poop collects on fluffy bottom area, have to clean. Have to lift them up on tall things.
Wonderful pets. I love cochins very much. Mine will follow me around, sit in my lap, and knows a lot of words.
Pros: Cute friendly and huggable! Even the roosters are cuddly
Cons: Muddy feet.
Love these! I have a breeding pair, they are great! Feet get dirty though with foot feathers, but they are ADORABLE and love to be held!
Pros: Sweet, affectionate, calm, beautiful
Cons: Not the brightest, can get mud on foot feathers, easy target for predators
I have a pullet and she is the most affectionate and calm chicken I've ever had. She's always wanting a cuddle and is by my side constantly. Unfortunately, they are not the brightest and aren't very alert. My cockerel was taken by a bird, which left me devastated has he was very beautiful with a lovely personality. They do get mud on their foot feather when it rains which I have had to bath them because of it. Over all they are affectionate, and excellent pets and great if you have children. The only major con is that they aren't very alert.
Pros: All + Beautiful, Gentle, and sweet
Cons: None
Pros: funny, Broody (yes thats good), snuggly, quiet.
Cons: dirty, eats a lot, poor layers.
The pros and cons say it all!
Pros: Lovable, quiet, good layer
Cons: Not really anything
Our cochin Gracie is a great layer for a cochin. She lays almost everyday and she gave us the smallest egg we've ever had and our first and only double yolker. I haven't had to deal with muddy feet because they seem to get clean on their own. She is kinda snobby and has to peck at you as a weird way of greeting.
Pros: sweet, cuddly, social, beautiful noises, come in lots of colors
Cons: less likely to forage on own, feathers on feet get muddy
I have two bantam cochins and I'm amazed at how sweet they are! My two are very sweet with each other and follow me around the yard. Right before I put them up for the night, one of my girls wants to cuddle and will fly in my hand. They make a beautiful sound when they're "talking" to each other. They don't seem too eager to forage on their own or too interested in table scraps. Their feathered feet get dirty easily.

Pros: super friendly; pretty; cant' fly well, so may not need to clip wings
Cons: Bottom is so fluffy it gets poo-covered; feathers on feet make her trip in tall grass; lazy
This is by far the most easy-going, sweet hen of my mixed flock. She will happily sit in my lap all day. I have a blue cochin, and most people agree that her fluffy shape is beautiful. She stays out of the garden with only one row of chicken wire around it because she rarely tries to fly. I think her small wing feathers can't give her enough lift to get more than a few inches off the ground. She always seems content, no matter where she is penned up.
Pros: Fluffy, sweet, funny, feathered feet, goes broody.
Cons: None
I love them! I've been wanting some but so hard to choose and your review on them was amazing, chickenluver10! I hope to find more about them!

I also like how everyone says they're sweet! I am hoping to get some soon! What more could I ask for? They're cute, sweet, fluffy, soft, good layers, go broody a lot, what bantam is better!
