Farm Innovators "All-Seasons" Heated Plastic Poultry Fountain - 3 Gal. Model HPF-100, 100-Watt

This 3 gallon poultry fountain is thermostatically controlled to operate only when necessary and...
Pros: It really keeps the water from freezing even in 20 below temps! Lasts several days.
Cons: I learned that I have to carry it to the coop upside down because if I bump it against something on the way, it can come apart and there goes the water.
I love this waterer. Living in Northern Minnesota our temps get well below freezing and since I work during the day, I can't keep switching waterers. It works great even in 20 below temps or more. It lasts for about three days with 5 hens. I do end up refilling it before it runs out so maybe could go 4 days but I never risked it.

Pros: keeps water liquid, large
Cons: none
I have the water-er set up inside of my coop for winter use. It has keept water in the liquid state all winter even when the outside temp was 15 below zero Ferinheight, there was just a little ice on the edge.

I fill it half full and it lasts my 4 chickens a week or more, At that point it needs to be cleaned anyway. I have it setting on a concrete block so it is elevated above the wood shavings getting scratched around.

I have had no issues with spilling or seperations like some folks. I carry it red side up and it is not hanging by the loop.

Pros: can fit loads in
Cons: allways falls over
i have a feeder but don't now wether to leave it on the floor or hang it up so it is easy for my chickens to eat from.
I have had this for over 2 years and it is still working. It took a little getting used to how to use it best. I fill it with a hose, and place it on a cinder block with a small plastic tub underneath to catch any splashed water. I will admit that the first few times I turned it over after filling it I spilled water and a couple of times the base came off after filling it. Once the plastic that secures the base and top became a little scuffed up that didn't happen again.
it works for me
Pros: easy to fill, can add ACV, wide trough makes it easier for crested breeds to drink
Cons: little heavy to carry any distance, short cord
I have 3 of these. They are all placed on cinder blocks against a wall. Have never had any trouble with any of them leaking or with chickens dirtying them. I remove the entire bottom to fill then attach the bottom and flip it. I even have one in a covered outdoor run with just a bale of straw to block the west wind and it stayed thawed at near 0*F. Barring any electrical malfunction I anticipate these lasting a good long time.

Pros: Never ever had the water freeze and it’s been a very cold winter so far! Coldest we have had was -15F the other night and water was fine!
Cons: Every so often the base falls off when carrying it to the coop.
Overall very happy with this item. It keeps the water from freezing. Only complaint is the plastic handle so you cannot hang it and if you don’t latch the base just right you spill water. Also you need to make sure the waterer is level in your coop or it will leak water all over!

Pros: Works as intended, cord storage, nice size, plug for bottom filling.
Cons: Pricey, not as durable as metal,
We purchased this last fall to use in our smaller coop. It worked well for us. I found it a little cumbersome to handle when full (3 gallons is about 24lbs. - I think.) and it is hard to balance on it's top to fill from the bottom. As long as it holds up to wear and tear, I am happy with this product.

Pros: Keeps water thawed - chickens are drinking more
Cons: I don't like the locking mechanism - first time I used it I spilled the whole thing all of the coop floor
The week before we were expecting it to be 15 to 20 below zero, I decided to purchase this from Agway. I was having to go out several times a day in 15-32 (above 0) degree weather to chop ice so the chickens could get some water, and I felt they weren't drinking enough. My suspicions were confirmed when the coldest day of the year (20 below zero), I got 9 eggs, and I only have 9 hens. By that time I had the waterer a couple days and I was having to refill it every other day so I knew they were drinking a lot more, and in addition laying more eggs! I am SO GLAD I purchased this!!

Pros: Easy to carry, doesn't freeze, easy to clean.
Cons: Short Cord
I bought this waterer over a year ago, and It was worked like a charm every single day since! It nice because I can use it for Ducklings and chicks, and then use it with my adult fowl. The plastic and is good and strong (except for the handle). It is very good at preventing my chickens water from freezing, even in -10 and snow. Th only con is that the cord is only about 8inches, which makes it hard to plug it in without an extension cord.

Pros: It works , easy to see how much water left
Cons: not easy to fill without spilling,
I own 5 of these. I only use in the winter. They do keep water from freezing. My 2 oldest ones did not have short cords factory attached to the base. Those are more prone to popping the circuit breaker than any of the newer type that have a short cord attached. I hung them from the ceiling the first 2 years. That made them easier to splash the bedding and more cleanup. I now have them on solid blocks which solved the problem caused by hanging them. They work well for winter conditions. They don't cost as much to run as some heated water bases. Can not be used outside where wind will chill faster that base can keep water thawed.

Pros: durable; water didn't freeze; easy to clean; non-corrosive; has legs on top for stable filling
Cons: The "flip" takes some practice.
I will admit that I have managed to spill a bit when trying to flip this over. The trick is to make good and sure that all 4 of the little tabs are secured and then to flip in the direction that keeps them secured. (If you flip the wrong direction, the tabs will slide out and the top won't be secure)
I do this just outside the coop, so that if I do spill, I am not making a mucky mess inside.
I have heard reviews for a similar waterer that said that the handles can fall off. I haven't had this happen, but I don't carry it too far, and I try not to do much moving to prevent dislodging the tabs. I have mine set on 4 paver stones so it's high enough up not to get bedding or dirt kicked into it, but isn't relying on the handle to hold it up all the time.
This one has survived 2 winters and shows no signs of falling apart. If it were to conk out, I would buy another.
Pros: Always keeps the water thawed, easy to see water level
Cons: Is hard to fill
I appreciate having this waterer. I did not find an alternative where I live. At first I had a very hard time filling. The small hole with a plug is so slow to fill and sometimes I didn't get it back in tight enough and lost the water. I started taking the whole base off and filling and so many time I lost all the water when I flipped it over. Now I just take my time and fill it with a garden hose. I am just glad to have water for the chickens, no matter how cold.
Pros: price is right, space saving, not many better alternatives
Cons: does not hang well, tricky to maneuver, does not have poo guard

i bought this in a pinch (unexpected weather) and before reading any reviews... i didn't see too many alternatives. i haven't had any luck with hanging feeders or waterers, in general they seem to be messy for me, so i cannot complain about that... but, when it arrived i was baffled by it's design.
however it did not take long to get used to filling it (even if my hose is not frozen, i use a jug to fill it) and flipping it (you have to be mindful of where you place it when filling, otherwise you immediately end up with dirt or snow in the dish!), while i wouldn't fill it in the coop and it is rather heavy when full, it is fine for the price and most importantly it is effective!

me & the girls give it a 3star experience

Pros: Holds 2 gallons + water and does not freeze.
Cons: It's heavy and has a flat top - just begging for chickens to perch and poop. Getting the bottom on and flipping over is kind of a trick. I learned how to keep the waterer from coming unlatched and dumping.
I own one of these and it seems like a good idea. I always fill it up, and then it is really heavy to move and tip out daily. We have ours up on blocks, plugged straight into an outlet.
You have to be very careful about tipping it out, or it will come apart. This is no different from the metal waterers which can come undone and the Harris waterers which you have to flip. But we are using it constantly.

Pros: heated water, great handle
Cons: hard to secure base
This is a good product. It kept the water from freezing down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I wish it had a better way to secure the base then the current method.

Pros: prevents ice
Cons: hard to fill
It prevents ice like it's supposed to. It's a little hard to fill. I've never used the plug at the bottom, I've just screwed off the base and filled it that way. Sometimes when I screw it back on and pick it up, the base falls off and water is everywhere. I only have 5 chickens so it holds enough water to last them a week. Overall I'm pretty happy with the product.
Pros: does keep water from freezing, VERY inexpensive to operate
Cons: pain in the butt to fill
I bought this to use year round. It works well at keeping the water from freezing even if it is left outside but its so hard to fill and carry, there have been a few times while i was walking it to the coop the bottom spun around and came off spilling water everywhere and then i had to refill it again. does have somwhat of a support to help it stand upsidedown while its being filled. I've just started filling up a bowl every day instead. I will be investing in something that has a top fil and probably won't use it till next winter and only when i absolutely have no other choice. it's a great idea and the heater works well but would probably be easier if it was a top fill. on the up side it costs next to nothing to run. i really didn't even notice a change in my electric bill, it's only 100 watts and is on a thermostat, i also have mine on an outdoor timer so it shuts off at night and comes on arounf 4am to thaw the water before the chickens get up

I needed a heated waterer for crazy NE Ohio winters. I liked that this had a built in thermometer so it wouldn't be on all the time, only when needed. It's been through 2 winters and has never failed. (Even though my chickens knock it over frequently.)
It can be a pain to fill. If you fill the top part and then try to put the bottom on its hard to get it to line up properly. I always take it apart to clean it so I've gotten in the habit of putting the bottom on then using the port to fill it. The handle for carrying and hanging seems flimsy to me. (Why it's not hung and they are able to knock it over)
I feel safer not having the metal "hot plate" style heater. Not perfect but what I prefer it over other options.

Pros: Keeps ice off, doesn't get water too hot, thermostatically controlled
Cons: Awkward to carry and fill, Short cord, questionable construction
We bought this at a local farm store mostly because it was the cheapest option. We had gone through a lot of normal waters because the ice would crack them and were sick of it. Our other option was to buy a galvanized one and a heating plate, but that would have been over $100, too much IMO. So we played about $30 for this one. I love that the bottom part is flexible, so if the power goes out or it is not plugged in, ice won't break it as easily as others. The top however is very thin and somewhat flimsy. Filling it is awkward too. There is a plug on the base, so you can fill it, then turn the top slightly so the hole is covered, plug it up, tip it over and carry it in. Well, the first few times I did it this way the base just fell off. So it's really easier to carry it upside down. My other problem is that the cord is strong, but a little too short. We had to use an extension cord to connect it to the outlet four feet away. It also seemed to leak a bit, because there was always a puddle of water around it. I do like that it can regulate the temp of the water so my chickens still get a drink that is not too hot and not too cold. And that it was fairly inexpensive compared to others of the same quality. I wouldn't use it in summer at risk of damaging the cord, so I have it in a plastic tub in the barn now, and will get it out this winter. It is a nice thing to have, and did hold up well, despite my initial thoughts. And it is very much worth it instead of breaking ice by hand every few hours, and running the risk that your chickens are dehydrated.

I would recommend it to most people, unless they were:

  • Unable to carry it
  • Far from electricity
  • Or in EXTREMELY cold areas, since only the base heats and the top might crack
