Black Star and Red Star are trade names used for hybrids of two other recognized breeds, not itself an APA recognized breed. They are one of many hybrids more commonly called Red Sex-Linked or Black Sex-links.

Typically a red male chicken breed is crossed with a white or barred female to breed them.

Crossing a Rhode Island Red male and a Delaware female makes a Red Star. By crossing a Rhode Island Red male and a Barred Plymouth Rock female, a Black Star is created.

Terrible Breed!!!
Pros: NOTHING!!!
Cons: Die at 1 year old
Start laying soon but die
Prone to health problems
Practically factory made!
I am really NOT impressed with the ISA Brown chickens or any related forum of them.
Wouldn't Buy Again
Pros: Solid layers the first year
Cons: Aggressive to flock mates, have issues laying after year 2, health problems
The Red Stars are my least favorite breed that I currently have. Sure, they laid great their first two years. However, I have one that continuously lays a soft egg and no amount of calcium or calcium pills have helped. I'm seriously considering culling her, due to her bullying nature. They are incredibly aggressive to other members of the flock. The high rate of egg production is just not worth the amount of issues that they have.

Love my Red stars! One of them (Jennie Mae) is the sweetest thing. A great chicken for laying and for beginners. They are also very friendly.

Never knew this breed existed- now I know we have one! We bought 6 from tractor supply thinking they were some sort of Rhode island or New Hampshire red. We had 2 get hit by a car and 4 make it to adulthood. All were very bold and boisterous (although they couldn't match our barred rock hens), and layed a fair amount of eggs, again, couldn't match or barred rocks. I loved them, although, we've had a lot of health problems and health-related deaths from these birds, usually around 2 or 3 years of age. We think it was egg-laying difficulty or heart problems. We currently have 1 Red star hen left named Flappy, and she's in perfect health (and head hen, finally)!

We have 24 of the Black Star and they are wonderful birds. If you are looking to sell brown eggs these are the birds!

My first chickens were 5 Red Sexlinks. They are very friendly sometimes almost to much. Nearly step on them every time i walk into the pen. I can not walk out the back of my house without them running over to greet me. I would say close to 6 eggs per 7 days. Small frame/body but i guess all the energy goes into egg production. Mine do not get along well with others. They are the first to the feeder and kick everyone else out until they are done. First for treats and run everyone else off. The 2 bosses stand up to the inlaws dog and also saved each other from a coyote. You had to see it to believe it. Coyote was about 2' from grabbing one and the other ran up to/towards the coyote just in time to distract it and give the other time to get away. Both hauled ass into the barn after that. So if i had to sum it up i would say they are some fearless loud mouth egg laying very friendly machines. Yep thats about right !!

i just found one of my barred rocks dead in the coop this morning..i noticed last night that she had a lot of yellowish white diahrea ..I cleaned up her vent and feathers and she seemed fine...this morning she was dead just by the waterer I have hanging in the coop...she had some slim in her beak...any ideas?...she was eating and drinking fine yesterday...

Loved our Red Stars. Haven't had any for a couple years now but we do miss those jumbo eggs. People used to freak when I'd give them 1/2 dozen Red Star and 1/2 dozen regular. Sometimes just for fun I'd fill a carton with 1/2 little Americana greens and 1/2 Red Star jumbo brown. The little green eggs really made the jumbo's look even bigger. People would think we were try to slip Goose eggs in on them.

Mine are awesome too. I just got back into chickens after over 40 years as a travel nurse, and the Fearsome Four don't let anything or anyone get too close to me if they have their way. Even our police dog has to wait his turn. It's so wonderful to be loved by these young Clucks. They're not very loud but they talk to me to get their point across. If I decide to breed them I have two very young pure RIRs up for the task. "Yeo, that's about right!!"

My Leghorn was having diarrhea that was yellow and thic this morning.... do you have a picture of it?

This is my second flock of Isa Brown chickens, both bought at Tractor Supply. My first flock was six ladies, and my current flock is eight. They are very dependable layers, generally an egg a day per chicken, and they are very easily handled. I free range them most days. I would recommend this breed for brown L-XL egg production, and ease of handling. Our family loves hanging out with our chickens.

I believe that’s what we have a Red Star pictured here can someone tell me if this reddish hen here is a Red Star... also took her awhile to start laying my other 3 layed at 3 1/2 months old they are now 6 months old and the reddish one lays very big eggs now... she just started laying 3 days ago

We bought all our chicks also from Tractor Supply all of ours made it... we have a Speckled Sussex, White Leghorn, Plymouth Barred Rock And I’m not Sure what the reddish hen is pictured here? They are all 6 months old now and very healthy

We have a sweet Red Star named Hedy (Hedy Lamar, all our chickens are named after old time actresses or female poets or writers). She joined the flock a bit later and had to bow and scrape for awhile, but now is the leader in a very pleasant, kind way. She follows us around like our little pet :).

I love the red sexlinks! They are reliable layers, they like cuddles, they don't eat too much like the dual purpose breeds. The older they get, the bigger the eggs but not every day. They almost never go broody. One did but she really didn't want to be a mom. The left the 2 chicks with me to entertain them. Lucky (her name after I saved her from a 4 foot black snake) is still with me after 4 years.

We love our black sexlinks! We currently have two pullets and lost our older hen last year. They are always my favorite birds. They aren't particularly beautiful to look at, but they are champ egg layers and absolutely sweet. My daughter says "they look like they've never had a bad day" because their disposition is so sunny. They can hold their own and can be at the top of the pecking order, but I've never seen them act cruel or particularly aggressive. Highly recommend this breed!
