    how to protect my chickens

German Shepherd Dogs tend to have a pretty high prey drive -- while they can be raised alongside birds, they can be hard to handle as well -- they require a lot of work. I know my Reed and Diesel get that "look" but Reed is a working dog with a nice working drive and Diesel is a not so well bred...

    how to protect my chickens

Remember, adding any dog to your "farm" is a lifetime commitment. A life is involved -- make sure you are ready for the commitment. Other than that, enjoy! :)

    awesome coop alarm

Grandfather once kept a pair of rat terriers that lived in the coops with the chickens. Never lost a chicken for a few years until he sold the dogs. They kept things like badgers to coons to rats and snakes and mice and even hawks and owls away :) They were wild dogs (given up and never played...

Two legged chicken thief in SW Warren County, Iowa.

... a person stole the chickens? By golly if they had stolen my pet indoor home chickens, someone would have been neutered/spayed right there, right then and have the police called on them (I don't think I'd neuter/spay anyone, but by golly, they'd get a kick right in the you-know-where area!)...

    The unthinkable happened - Ferret

Ahhh... thank goodness my ferrets are all in their cages. I still like to think my little buddies won't eat the birds, but alas, now it makes me weary! They sure do do a good job keeping rats out of the shed when I put one of them in there, but boy do I drag that booger back into the cage when...

Wanted: (Crele) Penendescenca & Pumpkin Hulsey Birds

We're moving within a year or two and I'm at the point where the birds have got to go in order to get ready for the big move. They just wouldn't survive being turned "loose" to survive and thrive the farm! The last thing I'd like to leave at the farm are Penedescencas and/or Pumpkin Hulseys...

Wanted: Small Bantam Hen - Young - Pet

...REALLY super friendly pullet. I would prefer to give one a home that needs a home. I am specifically looking for a very friendly pullet with that *special* personality. I don't care if she's gimpy, one-legged, uglier than sin, sounds like a dying squealing sow being butchered or anything...

What's The "Smartest" Thing You've Seen a Chicken Do?

Ladybird could find me anywhere when I'm napping. When she was broken, she hobbled on one foot, hopped on her the bed and crawled next to me. Years later and if I leave her kennel opened, she'll find me. There are many times, I fall asleep on the couch and wake up to her hoping on my chest...

    R.I.P. Ladybird - Spring 2008- August 30, 2011

Well, it aches me to say that Ladybird passed away a little over 24 hours ago. I'm not sure where to start and figured I'd let the community know and maybe aid me in "getting over" this. To say the least, my biggest nightmare happened and I about lost it. The death was even more worse, I ended...

    I Need to Vent

I'm in about the same predicament as you... here is what I did though and I hope it helps! (katy is right - birds will take up time and hassle and feed) I sold my birds. I have 50 birds now and I STILL have to downsize to about 30. It first started by getting rid of all the unnecessary...

Neighbors dog is back and will die......

More power to you, honey! I totally understand your viewpoint... your birds on someone else's property = your problem... another animal on your property causing harm = THEIR problem! Have you tried speaking with the dog owners? I hope an wish you luck on this <3

    should I kill this fox?

The best way to protect your flock is to build a Fort knox an probably get a good livestock guardian dog (which may cause trouble too, if you pick up a dog and do not know how to train it properly - also remember taking in a dog should be a lifelong commitment as well). I try to not blame wild...

    Favorite dish featuring tomato's?

I've eaten 25 tomatoes in the last 2 days... I'm scared I'll start puking, but goodness, I crave homegrown tomatoes so hard later on... <3 So I load up ASAP and as much as I can! I heard of a tomato salad but haven't tried it yet <3 Anyone got a good one? It's just sliced tomatoes, maybe some...

Tell me something GOOD that happened to you today.

I paid for my school books and tuition (a whopping $3000) BUT it's done, over with, I can breathe (I think) and I no longer have to fight over what courses I should and would and could have taken! Oh and it's not 100 degrees!
