Ginger and Splash seem to look like pullets but I'm not too sure about the other two. I was certain my silkie rooster was a pullet until he was almost 4-5 months old, so for now it's really a guessing game :)
I currently own one although I plan to get more, as my girl is not only one of my best layer she also always runs to greet me when I walk out the door. She's layed a large egg everyday since she was 5 months old. I'd definitely recommend Plymouth rocks to anyone with a backyard flock!
Usually a chicken of any breed will start to lay anywhere between 5-8 months. I have two pekin girls, one started laying at around six months the other is almost 7 months and we haven't gotten a single egg yet. Things like weather can affect laying as most chickens will stop laying in the winter...
My New Hampshire girl is a a very curious and friendly chicken. She's a great layer (I get an egg everyday!) and even lays through the winter. The only con I can think of is that she probably eats more than any other chicken I've had. If you're a beginner and want a larger bird I think new...
Thanks for the reply. It was a major relief that he was at least eating/drinking. We may be thinking about giving our other rooster away as this isn't the first incident with him attacking another chicken. Hopefully he'll recover soon!
Yesterday my silkie rooster was attacked by one of my other roosters. Although the other rooster is only a bantam he somehow got on top and was pecking around the head. Unfortunately when I reached them my poor silkie was rolling around and when I picked him up his head seem to be rolling to one...
I currently own 4 ducks and one of them is quite dark in colour, almost black. Recently it has been getting to almost 40 degrees (Celsius) and this duck seems to really be feeling the heat. Even at night when he's in his coop you can see him panting. Even though their pond is in the shade it...
Usually some of my other hens will try show them where the food was and encourage them to drink. But all she did was just sit it the box with them under her, so I dipped their beaks in the water and rubbed a bit of food on their beak, which got them going.
Recently, out broody hen hatched some adorabled little baby chicks. Since this is the first time she raised chicks we have had to intervene as we noticed they weren't eating or drinking. This probably sounds a bit stupid but is it Ok to hold her chicks as I don't want to cause them too much stress!
I have a hen and this is the first time I have let her sit on her eggs. Some of the eggs are at different stages of development (only by a few days) and I'm worried that when the first few hatch that she may abandon the rest of the clutch. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if she'll still...
I have a broody hen but instead of sitting on eggs, she's sitting on nothing. I was wondering if she knows that there are no eggs and she'll lay them or she's thinks there are eggs under her. We were wanting her to hatch the eggs instead of using an incubator.
Also another thing she's been...
I have two drakes, a pekin and a runner. Both were raised from babies and are now around 10 months old. They were very friendly when they were little but now everythings changed. They'll eat out of my hand but as soon as you touch them they run away. Could anyone help me?
I did a post a few months ago about some of my other chickens but now my cockerel and one of my pullets have grown up a bit more i was wondering if anyone could tell me if they were show quality. I was going to enter them into a fair so it isn't too serious. I wasn't 100% sure if this was the...
I do think now that I should have gotten more than one, but she was mainly a replacement for a hen we lost a few weeks ago.
I do get into the habit of called him a rooster but technically he's a cockerel ( 7 months old)
He is usually a sweetheart when it comes to people so I would really want...
I have recently purchased a New Hampshire red pullet ( she is around 2 and 1/2 months) and have tried to introduce her to my flock.
The flock constists of:
1 laying d'uccle
1 point of lay pekin bantam
1 3 month old Wyandotte
1 3 month old silkie
AND 1 VERY aggressive Wyandotte bantam Rooster...
I have recently got a few chicks who are 3 weeks old. I was looking at the head and saw some mites crawling around. They look orange but I'm not too sure on the type. I have poison which I used on my other hens when they had mites a few months ago but I'm not too sure about chicks.
Can anyone...
I only have two drakes, which used to get along fine but now things have started to change. My runner is a very friendly boy who, although is at sexually maturity, is very well-behaved. My pekin on the other hand, is the complete opposite. He will constantly chase my chickens, bite me until I...
I've decided to add some new chickens to my flock but I've decided out of two breeds. I have gone through the BYC breeds list and have had a look at the pros and cons but it would be good if someone could compare them to each other. I'm mainly looking at egg production and personality of them. I...
They MAY be crosses although I have a purebred runner and even though he is a bit more slender than them, he's not like others I have seen
(Sorry for the bad quality picture)
Sorry that I didn't keep you updated but around half an hour ago we found her in the bush. I think she may have been about to start brooding because she was in a sitting position. Unfortunately I think a cat may have came because it wasn't a nice sight to see. There were no feathers or anything...
