Welcome to Fur and Feathers Urban Roost I breed and show german shepherds, and have always had a love for all animals. When I used to bring stray cats home, my Dad started calling me Ellie May... I sheep herd with my shepherds, and my instructor has lots of chickens. It was suggested at...

Bantam Cochin Hens in Upstate NY-Albany area

I wish you were closer. I have a bantam cochin hen and a frizzle bantam cochin roo that I am trying to find a home for. I have barred rocks, and my hatching eggs were BR/cochin crosses, and have decided to sell them as a pair so I can have a pure flock. I'm in Ohio.

I hear chirping from my homemade bator!!!!

it appears that these were fertilized by the frizzle cochin roo. they look like sex linked chicks. one is completely solid black, with the darkest feet I've seen on a barred rock. The other is black with yellow spots on his head, wings and sides.

I hear chirping from my homemade bator!!!!

One chick out, 1:12 am. I didn't get much sleep, the incubator is in my bedroom. It chirped all night. Two have air holes, one no air hole but I hear it chirping. The last looks like its a no go, so hatch rate is 90%.

I hear chirping from my homemade bator!!!!

that junk is really not on top of it , the bookcase is behind it. Just a few test eggs to see if the thing works. My camera batteries died, but I will try to get closer picts of the two eggs in at the top that have cracks in them, w/o opening the bator. Two of the three on the bottom are moving.

3 day old chick too cold-hanging out in the incubator

I'm not sure that anything in this house is draft free. It's such an old house, and even with all of my windows taped, there is still a mysterious breeze... That's why it's in the incubator, the only really warm place. I took it out to give it some water, but no food yet. I'm thinking the...

    Woooo Chicks!!!

And the barred rocks are the black/gray with yellow/white dots on their heads. Way to go, I just picked up 11 barred rocks from the post office today. I was the talk of the office, don't think they've ever gotten chicks in my urban postal office

3 day old chick too cold-hanging out in the incubator

I got my new chicks today, didn't expect them, so no brooder set up at first. I had to take them with me on errands (OH temps) and finally home to sit while I wipped together a mock up brooder. Well one was over on his side, eyes closed, not with the group. I tried to get him warm, but he...

My eggs are fertile!!!!! What do I do now?

So it would be right about that time. And it is possible that they are pure, or the frizzle covered her. They are in a little tub, so the ones laid this Sun, Monday and Tues are on top of the ones laid last Mon, Tues, Thurs, Sat. So I guess I have nothing to lose, and my sister in law will...

My eggs are fertile!!!!! What do I do now?

So I was curious as to whether my eggs where fertile. I butchered my barred rock roo well before my girl started laying. She's been laying for a week, the eggs are in the fridge, and there is a frizzle banty roo and a few cockerels (20-24 weeks old) . So I cracked an egg and got one with a bulls...

bummed out, they're nearly all roos

Quote: Im so sorry, but I looked at your pics....of the last four, three are roos, but I wanted to point out that you said you purchased these birds at six weeks...they are usually sexable by looking at them at this age...sounds to me like the man who ordered from meyers separated out the ones...

bummed out, they're nearly all roos

Quote: Yeah, which is why I didn't really question it until the rather loud crowing two days ago. It's been pouring non stop for weeks, and ever since two went missing the beginning of Sept, no one has free ranged. There was one with a curved feather, so I suspected, but I am just now really...

How can I get my chickens to drink out of a dog igloo water bowl?

My chickens will eat and drink from anywhere, anything, anytime even sipping water from my hand. That is such a good idea. I bought a gallon waterer, I just could not fathom how big BR are and how much they drink. I fill it several times a day. I have a dog waterer, but the dogs all have horse...
