My bantam cochins are about a year and a half old. I feed them a layer feed with an occasional leftover from the kitchen. My neighbors had some whole corn that they gave me and I am wanting to give it to the chickens. I'm nervous about giving it to them because I am afraid the kernels are too...
ANOTHER UPDATE!!! The hens are about 10 months old now and I got my first egg!
I checked on them Saturday afternoon. Saturday night we had a big party at our house. Sunday I was on the couch all day with a hangover and totally forgot to check on them. Checked on them today and had 2...
UPDATE: The hens are about 8 1/2 months old now. Still no eggs. Apparently they are waiting for spring. I need some more reassurance that this is normal or some advice on helping them along. Its rather frustrating wading through the snow everyday to find no eggs again.
I have a ceramic heat bulb that only gives off heat, no light. I got it at a pet store, near the reptile stuff. It gets hot really fast. You will need a nice heat lamp, properly secured, to use it. Mine is hooked to a thermocube. It cycles itself on and off as needed. I really don't know...
I love your coops but I hate these posts about how you stumbled on these websites that happen to sell the coops you make... I have no problem with you wanting to sell your coops here. They seem very nice. I just don't really like the way you go about it.
When I first moved my chickens into the coop they would not leave the coop for a week. I just let them be and one morning they wandered out on there own. I don't think I would worry about it.

That made me laugh a little. I realize what I have planned is major overkill and you've got me seriously questioning it again. I only have the 4 bantams and my coop is very small, uninsulated, and elevated (my run extends under the coop area). At the very least I am going to have to...

I really like that idea, I wasn't aware they sold those thermocubes with different temperature settings. You happen to remember where you got the 20 to 30 degree one?
I had not really thought of a power outage but I am not too worried about it. I've lived here in town for about 6 years and the power has never been out for more then an hour. I won't have any trouble hanging the heat lamp securely but I am worried about dust collecting on it. I don't know...
Finally figured out how I am going to take care of my 4 little hens this winter. I thought I would post about it incase anyone had any other suggestions or if anyone is still debating how they are going to handle this winter.
I got 4 little bantam cochin chicks this spring, on Mothers Day...
I got 4 bantam hens that are about 6 months old that haven't laid any eggs yet. Is that normal? They seem prefectly happy and healthy to me but I am new to chickens. I am still feeding them chick starter/grower.
UPDATE: The hens are about 8 1/2 months old now. Still no eggs. Apparently...
I ran to the feed store and took a look at everything they have. I think I am just going to keep them on the chick starter/grower that I have been using intill they start laying. I have started leaving table scraps in the run for them. Gonna clean out whatever is left at the end of the day...
I have 4 cochin bantams, 11 weeks old, and my bag of chick starter/grower is almost gone. I am thinking of buying a bag a layer and mixing the last of the starter/grower with it for the next week or two. Is it too early to switch to layer?
I need advise about my roost. I am building a mini-coop for my backyard. It will be home to 3 bantam cochins. Here are some pictures.
The inside of the coop is only about 3 feet by 3 feet. I plan on putting bedding up to the top of the baseboard, that will give me about 4 1/2...
